A tragic incident has unfolded in Bedfordshire, England, where a mother of five, Michelle Roberts, passed away from a heart attack after reportedly waiting approximately 80 minutes for an ambulance. Her husband, Ben Roberts, described the agonising experience that escalated into a family tragedy.

On the day in question, 39-year-old Michelle was at home with her children when she began to experience severe chest pain and a burning sensation in her throat. Concerned, she first called her husband, Ben, before reaching out to the non-emergency number 111 for advice. Ben, aged 43, returned home to find Michelle still on the line, and they both remained unaware of the severity of her condition. She instructed him to prepare a bag and care for their children, declaring poignantly, “Ben, I’m scared,” before he left the room.

As Ben began cooking dinner for their kids, it became increasingly clear that no ambulance had arrived. After about 30 minutes of waiting anxiously and intermittently checking the door, he went upstairs only to discover Michelle slumped and unresponsive. In a state of panic, Ben dialled 999 to inquire about the ambulance’s arrival, but received no estimated time for help. He was advised to initiate CPR immediately.
With tremendous effort, Ben attempted to revive his wife. However, the situation grew horrifying when he noticed blood leaking from Michelle’s eyes, ears, and mouth. “They’re crying, and they don’t know what’s going on,” he recounted, reflecting on the distress experienced by their children as they witnessed this traumatic scene. After nearly an hour of CPR, a first responder finally arrived, but Ben noted a disturbing lack of urgency from the paramedic.
Once the initial responder arrived, a wave of emergency personnel followed, but it was ultimately too late. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Michelle was pronounced dead 30 minutes later. Ben’s heartache was palpable as he remembered the moment a paramedic told him, “there’s been a catastrophic incident,” referring to the loss of his wife.
In the wake of her passing, Ben has been left grappling with overwhelming grief and uncertainty. He expressed his anguish and questioned whether his wife might still be alive had the emergency response been swifter. “I’ve lost my wife, lost my job, been diagnosed with PTSD,” he lamented, reflecting on the long-term impact of this tragedy on his family. The harrowing wait for medical assistance may have cost them Michelle’s life, leaving Ben feeling desolate and questioning the healthcare system.
In response to this devastating situation, the East of England Ambulance Service issued an apology to Ben Roberts and expressed their condolences to the family. In a statement, the service acknowledged that there were significant delays on the day Michelle needed emergency assistance and admitted that their response fell short of the standards expected by patients and their families. They referenced operational pressures and handover delays between the 111 and 999 services as contributing factors.
In light of this tragic event, the ambulance service has committed to learning from these circumstances and working diligently to improve response times for the most critical emergencies. Their spokesperson remarked, “We recognize the impact that our delayed response had on Mr Roberts and his family,” while also promising ongoing collaboration with hospital partners to address the existing delays and enhance service provision.
This heartbreaking story serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the pressing need for timely emergency medical services. The delay in response not only cost a young mother her life but also left a deep wound in her family. As they navigate their grief, the Roberts family is left questioning the healthcare system that ultimately failed to provide the help they desperately needed when it mattered most.
