7 Dead, Including 2 Children, After Bus Carrying People to Engagement Party Blows a Tire and Overturns 

A tragic accident in Turkey has resulted in the loss of seven lives, including two young children, when a minibus overturned in the Lice district on Saturday, August 15. The vehicle, carrying a total of 18 passengers, was on its way to an engagement party when disaster struck, following what is believed to be a tyre burst.

According to reports from local news outlets, including Cumhuriyet and Sabah, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. local time. The minibus veered off the road and overturned into a ditch. Emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they found that not only were two individuals pronounced dead on-site, but five others succumbed to their injuries later in hospital.

The casualties have been identified as five siblings and their two nephews: Veysi, Vedat, Feyziye, Özcan, and Naide Saylikay, alongside 3-year-old Zeyd Saylikay and Nazya Demirhan. Following autopsies, they were laid to rest at the Yeniköy Modern Cemetery in the Bağlar district.

Official statements from the Diyarbakır Governorship confirmed that nine other passengers sustained injuries during the accident, with various degrees of severity. Medical teams promptly mobilised to transport the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment. The local authority expressed their condolences to the bereaved families while confirming that an investigation into the incident has commenced.

Turkish Governor of Diyarbakır, Murat Zorluoğlu, provided further details regarding the incident on X, stating that the minibus’s tyre burst was the primary cause of the vehicle losing control and rolling down the embankment. He later visited those injured in hospital and monitored their recovery processes closely. Zorluoğlu reassured the public that the judicial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident would be thorough and meticulous.

In light of the devastating news, Zorluoğlu extended his condolences to the families and friends of the victims, reiterating the collective grief felt by the local community. “I extend my condolences and prayers for patience to their families, loved ones, and all our fellow townspeople,” he wrote. He then expressed a heartfelt wish for the recovery of those still undergoing treatment.
