In a recent episode of the podcast “Good Hang” hosted by Amy Poehler, Rosie O’Donnell opened up about her journey in navigating her sexuality in the public eye. The 64-year-old comedian and actress discussed the complexities of her past comments, particularly her longtime admiration for actor Tom Cruise, and how they were often misinterpreted by fans.

During the show, O’Donnell reminisced about her time hosting “The Rosie O’Donnell Show,” which debuted in 1996. She expressed her fondness for Cruise, who made a guest appearance on her programme. Although the two shared humorous interactions, not everyone grasped that O’Donnell’s affection was not romantic. “I often said, ‘I don’t want him in bed. I want him to mow my lawn and bring me an iced tea,’” O’Donnell stated. Despite her clarity, she recalled how many people still assumed her feelings indicated a desire for a sexual relationship.
Reflecting on her public coming out as a lesbian in 2002, she described her astonishment at the surprise many felt about her sexuality. “When I finally did come out and people were shocked, I was like, ‘How the hell are you shocked?’” she recounted, pointing to her comments about Cruise as evidence of her openness regarding her sexual orientation.
O’Donnell went on to highlight that while she may admire certain men, her feelings do not equate to a desire for sexual intimacy. She recalled her admiration for Sydney James Harcourt, who recently played the Rum Tum Tugger in the revival of “Cats.” “He is the sexiest human I’ve ever seen and so unbearably talented,” O’Donnell said, acknowledging the thrill of being sung to by him. However, she maintained that these feelings do not translate to sexual attraction.
In a more recent experience, O’Donnell recounted a meeting with a handsome doctor at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. Despite his initial romantic interest, she made it clear: “News flash, big lesbian, I don’t know if you heard, but been that way since 1970.” This encounter was quickly followed by a meeting with a gay flight attendant who had just come out to his family. O’Donnell expressed her pride in being part of the LGBTQ+ community and connected deeply with the young man’s story. “I could never leave my gay family,” she remarked, reinforcing her strong sense of identity and belonging within the community.
The conversation with Poehler highlighted the evolution of discussions around sexuality since the ‘90s. O’Donnell noted that, in her early career, the idea of being a successful, openly lesbian figure in show business seemed almost unthinkable, citing the absence of openly gay role models at the time, such as Ellen DeGeneres. She remembered the skepticism surrounding gay characters on television, including a reference to the show “Love, Sidney,” which was cancelled after just two seasons.
Despite the challenges of the era, O’Donnell candidly shared her feelings during the ‘90s when she and her then-partner Kelli Carpenter chose not to publicise their relationship. “I said, ‘Listen, I’m gay and I don’t imagine ever saying it because I’d rather fight for kids who are abused, who don’t have a voice, than fight for adults,’” O’Donnell recalled. This decision was met with mixed reactions from the people around them, including her publicist, who sought to maintain a low profile for the couple.
In a more personal note, O’Donnell revealed that Cruise continues to remember her on special occasions, sending greetings for her birthday and Christmas since their first meeting. This unexpected friendship reflects O’Donnell’s ability to maintain connections despite the whirlwind of public perception surrounding her.
Recently, O’Donnell revived her performing career with a one-woman show titled “Common Knowledge” off-Broadway, showing that she remains a versatile and vibrant presence in entertainment. Her candid discussions about her identity, misinterpretations of her truth, and her pride in the LGBTQ+ community resonate powerfully with audiences today, highlighting the ongoing need for understanding and acceptance of diverse sexual identities.
Through her reflections, Rosie O’Donnell not only clarifies her own journey but also contributes to the broader conversation about sexuality, identity, and the complexities of human connections in an evolving societal landscape.
