Deidra “DJ Spinderella” Roper is set to reunite with the iconic hip-hop group Salt-N-Pepa for the first time in several years as they embark on their upcoming It’s Iconic Tour. This reunion marks a significant milestone following a turbulent period of legal disputes and personal differences that have plagued the trio in recent years.

In a discussion with PEOPLE, Roper expressed her positive feelings about her relationship with Sandra “Pepa” Denton and Cheryl “Salt” James, stating, “We’re in a good space today.” The Grammy-winning artist, now 55, emphasised that the dynamics within the group can fluctuate, referring to their bond as a sisterhood that experiences ups and downs. “It’s all about just being on the same page,” she added, highlighting the sense of harmony currently present among them.
The It’s Iconic Tour is particularly momentous for Roper, as it represents her first time touring with Salt-N-Pepa in years. Roper joined the group in 1987 and has since played a pivotal role in their success. Following her departure in 2019, she claimed to have been terminated via email, an action that prompted her to file a lawsuit against James and Denton over unpaid royalties and other grievances. However, that case was settled out of court later that year.
Despite the challenges faced, including being excluded from the production of a biopic about the group, Roper insisted that reconciliation was possible, albeit contingent on receiving an apology and feeling respected. Previous tensions had led her to declare that things between them would never be the same without a shift in attitude from her former bandmates.
Looking ahead to the tour, Roper is focused on maintaining her mental well-being and suggests that she is adopting a healthy lifestyle, both physically and emotionally. “Anything negative in my space won’t help me get through this tour,” she explained, indicating that she is taking steps to safeguard her mental health during this pivotal time.
The reunion coincides with several other significant events in Roper’s life, including her recent induction into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame. Reflecting on her career, she noted that legacy is defined by the impact one has, stating, “We hear how we’ve inspired women,” particularly regarding themes of empowerment and resilience in Salt-N-Pepa’s music. She described their work as contributing to the soundtracks of many lives and praised the journey they’ve shared, despite the challenges.
Roper’s contributions to the group and the broader music industry as a female DJ have been especially profound, with many fans stating they were influenced by her work. She aims to continue inspiring others while also focusing on health and wellness through her new collaborations.
Recently, DJ Spinderella has teamed up with Planet Fitness and Apple Music to promote health through music. This collaboration is designed not only to boost physical fitness but also aims to recognise the benefits of music as a mood enhancer. She has created an exclusive playlist available on Planet Fitness’ Apple Music page, further blending exercise with the joy of music.
“I think music is a mood. It can change your mood as an enhancer. It can make you happy. It can make you sad,” Roper said regarding the importance of music in everyday life. Her goal is for the partnership to create an environment where fitness can be enjoyable, encouraging people to integrate music into their workout routines.
As Salt-N-Pepa prepare to co-headline the It’s Iconic Tour alongside TLC and En Vogue, Roper seems poised to embrace this long-awaited reunion. The tour will span across North America and even extend to New Zealand, further solidifying their legacy in the entertainment industry.
Overall, DJ Spinderella’s journey back to her bandmates represents not just a physical reunion on stage, but also a personal evolution that reflects the challenges and triumphs of a long-standing career in the music industry. The upcoming tour heralds a new chapter that fans are eagerly anticipating as Salt-N-Pepa take to the stage together once more.
