A tragic incident unfolded in Florida on Friday, August 7, when a five-year-old boy with autism was reported missing from his home. The child, who was nonverbal, was last seen by his father at around 5 a.m. local time after the two fell asleep together. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) revealed that efforts to locate him concluded in heartbreak when his body was discovered in a nearby retention pond.

The boy’s father alerted the authorities at approximately 9:30 a.m., expressing concern after waking to find his son missing from their apartment situated in the Northgreen at Carrollwood complex. According to Sheriff Chad Chronister, the father had noticed that the screened-in area of their residence had been opened prior to making the emergency call.
As soon as the report was made, over 140 deputies were mobilised to search for the child. They were supported by the HCSO’s aviation unit, canine teams, drone operators, and a dive squad. In an effort to locate the boy, authorities thoroughly scoured the area surrounding the complex.
The search efforts were sadly brought to a conclusion when the boy’s body was found submerged in a pond located approximately 30 feet behind the apartment building. The canine unit was instrumental in pinpointing the area, leading the dive team to search the shallow waters, where they ultimately made the tragic discovery.
The child was described in the missing person report as standing roughly three feet and eleven inches tall, with brown hair. At the time of his disappearance, he was reportedly wearing a beige Spider-Man shirt, a nappy, and no trousers.
This case marks the second instance within a two-month period involving the drowning of a child with autism in close proximity to the same apartment complex. Sheriff Chronister highlighted the alarming trend, urging parents to proactively seek swimming lessons for their children, particularly those with special needs. He stated, “We know scientifically proven that autistic children are prone and attracted to bodies of water.”
In light of this tragedy, Chronister expressed pride in the swift response of his team but acknowledged the heartache of the outcome. He emphasised the importance of drowning prevention and public awareness regarding the potential dangers faced by children, especially those with autism.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into this distressing incident. The community is collectively mourning the loss of this young life, grappling with the reality of losing a child under such tragic circumstances.
