Chance the Rapper is gearing up to celebrate a significant milestone in his career as he embarks on the Colouring Book Ten Year Anniversary Tour. Kicking off in his hometown of Chicago on August 8, the tour will showcase the Grammy-winning artist’s acclaimed album that has had a profound impact on his career since its release a decade ago.

Reflecting on the journey so far, Chance, born Chancelor Johnathan Bennett, recently spoke with PEOPLE about the success of *Colouring Book* and what the honour of the anniversary means to him. In addition to discussing his pioneering achievements, he highlighted his aspirations and the sentiments accompanying this anniversary celebration.
Since the release of *Colouring Book*, Chance has made history as the first streaming-only artist to receive a Grammy nomination, a feat he accomplished in 2017. He ultimately walked away with three prestigious awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album. “I always used to watch the Grammys with my mum on Sundays,” he reminisced. “Performing at the Grammys was a really big deal for me.”
The rapper expressed a sense of calm that accompanies achievement, stating, “We’re rewarded in a bunch of ways, but specific accolades like trophies are cool.” However, he acknowledges that this also raises new questions about his future endeavours: “Once I did it, there’s just this moment of, ‘Okay. Well, what do I do next?’”
Looking back on the album’s creation, Chance acknowledged the personal growth that has taken place over the past ten years. “I was 23 when I made the project,” he shared, reminiscing about the early days of fatherhood as he welcomed his first child. “It’s wild going back to the themes and realising how much I’ve changed.”
Among these themes is the song “Same Drugs,” which explores the complexities of relationships and personal growth. “Now, things change consistently,” he noted, reflecting on how the passage of time affects both personal relationships and individual identity. “It’s deep doing that song,” he added, emphasizing the emotional resonance the piece holds for him.
Fans can expect a comprehensive performance during the anniversary tour, with Chance stating that he intends to include all 14 tracks from *Colouring Book*, along with potential new material. This dedication extends not only to his music but also to giving back to his community. In the same year that *Colouring Book* was released, he founded SocialWorks, a non-profit organisation aimed at supporting Chicago’s youth. To date, the initiative has reached over 50,000 students and is reported to have contributed $12 million to local education efforts.
As the tour runs until October 11, Chance is also looking to the future and has ambitious goals he wishes to fulfil. “I would love to play the Super Bowl before I get up out of here,” he admitted. Further aspirations include mastering a musical instrument and potentially embarking on a tour across Africa. He recently returned from Kenya, where he spent time with his daughters.
Amidst his numerous accolades and professional achievements, Chance considers the ongoing ability to be authentic and connect with his audience as his greatest success. He stated, “It’s the ability to wake up and do it and to be uncomfortable and be myself consistently.” This commitment to his artistry and community plays a vital role in motivating him.
As Chance the Rapper sets out on this anniversary tour, he does so not just to celebrate the past, but to engage with his fans once more, sharing the journey of growth and the continuous evolution of his music. With a decade of *Colouring Book* behind him, the future promises exciting possibilities for both him and his audience.
