Los Angeles County health authorities are currently investigating a measles case associated with a visitor at Universal Studios Hollywood. The incident occurred on July 26, where the infectious individual spent a full day at the popular theme park between the hours of 10 a.m. and 9 p.m. local time. This announcement was made by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health on August 5.
In light of this development, health officials are advising anyone who visited the park on that day to verify their immunity status and remain vigilant for symptoms of measles until August 16. Those exposed to the virus can develop the illness within a window of seven to 21 days, adding urgency to the health advisory.
Dr Muntu Davis, the Health Officer for Los Angeles County, underscored the serious nature of measles, highlighting its highly contagious nature and the potential for severe complications. “Measles spreads easily and can lead to serious complications, including pneumonia, brain swelling, and even death,” he stated. With summer travel on the rise, Davis emphasised the importance of confirming immunity, particularly in crowded environments.
Universal Studios Hollywood has confirmed that it is cooperating with health officials in response to the ongoing investigation. The park is working to follow the guidance provided by the Department of Public Health as they assess the situation.
Measles symptoms typically surface within a week following infection, beginning with fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes. These early signs are then often followed by the appearance of a distinct rash, which usually starts at the face before spreading to the rest of the body. The general advice for those who may have been exposed is to watch for these indicators.
Current statistics reveal a worrying trend regarding measles cases in the United States. As of August 6, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded a total of 2,465 confirmed cases across the country for the year 2026, surpassing the 2,289 cases documented throughout all of 2025. The CDC data indicates that a significant proportion—93%—of this year’s cases have involved individuals who are either unvaccinated or whose vaccination status is unclear.
Health experts recommend that individuals receive two doses of the MMR vaccine for optimal protection against measles, mumps, and rubella. The vaccination schedule suggests that the first dose is given between the ages of 12 to 15 months, followed by a second dose between the ages of 4 and 6 years.
