Fossils recently uncovered along the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe have led to the identification of a new dinosaur species that roamed the region approximately 210 million years ago. Named Musango matusadonaensis, this species represents only the fifth dinosaur discovered in Zimbabwe, marking a significant addition to the country’s paleontological record.

The discovery was made during a 2018 research expedition to Spurwing Island, involving an international team of scientists from Zimbabwe, South Africa, and the United Kingdom. The fossilised remains, which include sections of a hind leg—namely the thigh, shin, and ankle bones—exhibited enough distinctive features to qualify as a new species altogether. This important finding has been documented in a recent edition of the Journal of Systematic Paleontology.

Musango matusadonaensis inhabited northern Zimbabwe during the Late Triassic period, a crucial era in the evolution of dinosaurs when they were starting to increase in size and diversity. The identification of this species sheds light on the early days of dinosaur evolution and the ecological dynamics of that time.
Professor Paul Barrett, a lead author on the study and a paleontologist at the Natural History Museum in London, discusses the fortuitous nature of the discovery. “We were walking along the shoreline when I noticed these leg bones eroding out of the ground,” Barrett recounted. Estimations suggest that Musango matusadonaensis stood approximately 1.5 metres tall at the hip and weighed around 390 kilograms. It belongs to the sauropodomorph group, which includes the long-necked dinosaurs that would eventually evolve into the massive sauropods, some of the largest terrestrial animals known. The species name pays tribute to the Musankwa houseboat, which served as the team’s floating laboratory during their fieldwork, as well as to a nearby river.
The evolutionary relationships of Musango matusadonaensis indicate potential connections to dinosaurs previously discovered in regions such as Argentina and South Africa, suggesting that these early dinosaurs could traverse connected landmasses in a bygone era.
This newly identified species highlights the significant paleontological potential present within Africa. According to Dr. Kimberley Chapelle, a co-author of the research, the lack of dinosaur fossils found on the continent predominantly stems from an “undersampling” issue. She emphasised that fewer researchers have been actively searching for dinosaur remains in Africa compared to other parts of the world.
With this landmark discovery, Chapelle asserted that Musango matusadonaensis serves to illustrate the untapped opportunities for further paleontological contributions in Zimbabwe and the wider African region. The scientists involved are hopeful that this finding may spur increased interest and exploration in African palaeontology, paving the way for future discoveries that could reveal more about the continent’s ancient biological diversity.
