Iconic rock band Five Finger Death Punch has unveiled their latest studio album, ‘Legacy,’ which serves as a tribute to their 20-year journey in the music industry. Released on July 31, the album marks a significant milestone for the band, featuring a collection of ten tracks that reflect their rich history and aspirations for the future.
Zoltan Bathory, the band’s guitarist, expressed the importance of this album in a recent interview. He stated that ‘Legacy’ was crafted to encapsulate the band’s journey, from their humble beginnings to their current status. Bathory elaborated, “You can be famous for saying something crazy on the internet, but that’s not a legacy. A legacy is something you really have to work on, and it takes time. If you’ve created something lasting, even when you are gone, it will still be here.”
Following the release, the band is hitting the road for their 20th Anniversary World Tour, which is set to continue throughout October. The tour will then pause before resuming in January with several shows planned in the United Kingdom. This extensive tour highlights the band’s commitment to engaging with their fans and celebrating this milestone.
When discussing the dynamics within the band, Bathory touched on the foundations of their long-standing collaboration. He emphasised that no disagreement ever escalates to a significant level. “This is a tiny planet in a vast universe; your problems are not as big as you think they are,” he shared. Bathory noted that petty disputes, like the length of a guitar solo, are trivial in the grand scheme of their creative journey.
Reflecting on the diverse personalities within the group—Bathory alongside bandmates Ivan Moody, Andy James, Chris Kael, and Charlie Engen—he likened their collaboration to that of a “SWAT team”. Each member plays a crucial role, and their ability to learn and operate together has been paramount to their enduring success.
Bathory also reminisced about some of the most memorable experiences during their time as a band, particularly their performances in the Middle East. He recalled the adrenaline of playing shows at military camps, where they donned full military gear for safety amidst active war zones. “We wanted to bring a piece of home to the soldiers,” he shared, recognising the respect they hold for military personnel.
One poignant memory that Bathory holds dear involves a fan who credits the band with saving his life. He shared a powerful story about a young attendee who gifted them a red pen, claiming to have written his suicide note with it. After being introduced to the band’s song “Coming Down,” the fan changed his mind about ending his life. Years later, now a grown man with a family, he approached the band again, reminiscing about that life-altering moment.
Bathory described the emotional reunion, stating, “Ivan [Moody] ran to the dressing room, came back with the pen, and the guy broke down crying. Moments like that remind you of the impact you can have on someone’s life.” Such experiences solidify the band’s purpose in their musical journey.
“Sometimes you’re onstage in front of thousands of people and you think, ‘I’m just making noise,’” Bathory reflected. “But when these profound moments occur, you realise you have a place in the world and that what you’re doing truly matters.”
