Alea Hunt, a 27-year-old wedding photographer and furniture flipper from Franklin, Tennessee, has embarked on a remarkable journey towards financial freedom. Facing the daunting reality of over £30,000 in debt, Hunt decided it was time for a change. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, she opened up about her experience and how her thrifting hobby has transformed into a significant source of income.

Hunt’s financial struggles began to feel overwhelming. With aspirations for her family and a genuine desire to achieve financial stability, the weight of her debt became increasingly burdensome. “We had like £30,000 worth of debt just kind of sitting there not moving at all for a couple of years, and that number felt so paralyzing,” she shared. “Being 27 and having that amount of debt felt embarrassing, especially when considering my goals in life.”

Motivated to change her financial situation, Hunt turned to her love for thrifting. After moving into a new home, she discovered a passion for finding unique furniture pieces and decor. “I just started seeing all these items that I loved, and it was killing me to leave them at the store,” she recounted. This new interest quickly evolved into a side hustle when she stumbled upon an inspiring video on Instagram. A fellow thrifter had claimed to make hundreds of dollars weekly from their finds, prompting Hunt to explore this potential income stream.
With enthusiasm and determination, Hunt purchased a thrifting guide and committed to the newfound venture. Within just a couple of days, she had already earned £250 from selling her first finds. “Every dollar I made from reselling went straight toward our debt,” she recalls. Keeping meticulous records in her notes app, she tracked her purchases, sales, and profits closely.
After two months of reselling, Hunt decided to share her journey on social media, posting weekly videos that detailed her buys and profits. Her decision to be transparent about her debt payoff journey resonated with many, and her online following began to grow rapidly. Today, she has amassed nearly 15,000 followers across Instagram and TikTok, many of whom reach out to express their gratitude for her inspiring journey.
Hunt emphasised the importance of this financial hustle not just as a means to eliminate debt but also to foster a healthier relationship with money. Rather than reducing her family’s lifestyle to the bare minimum, her goal was to create an additional income stream. “You don’t have to squeeze your life dry to pay off your debt,” she explained. “Start small. For example, maybe cut back on two coffees a week.”
To enhance her sales, Hunt utilises her background in photography, understanding that presentation is key when selling thrifted items online. “Staging is everything,” she stated, advising new sellers to avoid generic shots that can make listings less appealing. She encourages sellers to imagine how buyers would see the piece in their own home and to enhance listings with thoughtful staging.
By May, Hunt had made significant progress, reducing her original debt to just under £15,000. However, her financial journey took an exciting turn soon after. In June, she announced to PEOPLE that she had successfully paid off her entire debt and celebrated reaching 10,000 followers on Instagram on the same day. “I am on Cloud 9,” she exclaimed. “It feels incredible to have seen a goal through in my real life and to have inspired others while doing so in my online life.”
Today, Alea Hunt serves as a source of inspiration for many individuals facing similar debt struggles. Her story emphasises the power of creative thinking and resourcefulness, demonstrating how hobbies can be transformed into lucrative ventures. Through resilience and a commitment to her goals, Hunt has not only transformed her finances but also built a supportive community that values financial empowerment and personal growth.
