Alan Ritchson, known for his role in the series “Reacher,” has recently spoken out regarding an unsettling encounter he had with a neighbour during a family motorcycle ride. This incident, which took place in March and later attracted unwanted media attention, has been described by Ritchson as one of the most frightening experiences of his life.

During an appearance on the podcast “Armchair Expert,” hosted by Dax Shepard, the actor recounted the series of events that unfolded when a man confronted him while he was riding a recently acquired, custom-built motorcycle in his Tennessee neighbourhood. Ritchson was accompanied by his children, and the actor made it clear that his primary concern was their safety during the altercation. “I’ve got to protect me and I’ve got to protect my kids,” he said, reflecting on the urgency of the situation.
Initially, Ritchson mentioned that he believed the neighbour was simply reacting as most locals do when they encounter him. However, the situation escalated dramatically when, without warning, the man stepped directly in front of his bike. “That’s when it got weird,” Ritchson stated, realising that the man’s behaviour was far from normal. He speculated that the loud noise of his motorcycle could have been misinterpreted by the neighbour as reckless, fuelling the aggressive confrontation that ensued.
According to the actor, the unnamed neighbour, later identified as Ronnie Taylor, began to approach him aggressively. “He was huge, the same size as me, and he was heated,” Ritchson described. When the man stepped closer, pushing into Ritchson’s personal space, the actor felt compelled to respond physically, pushing him back. “I could smell alcohol on his breath,” Ritchson recalled, noting the time of day was around 11 a.m. on a Sunday, suggesting a potentially troubling context for the neighbour’s aggression.
As the altercation continued, Ritchson attempted to leave the scene but was confronted again when Taylor obstructed his path. The tension peaked when, according to Ritchson, Taylor two-handedly shoved him off his motorcycle, causing both the actor and bike to crash to the ground. At that point, Ritchson felt he had no choice but to defend himself and his children, leading to him striking Taylor in order to create enough space to escape.
Ritchson expressed feelings of regret about the confrontation, emphasising that he did not wish to harm the man. “I was aware that I didn’t want to knock him out or break a bone,” Ritchson said, explaining his intent was merely to deter the aggressor. The actor also highlighted how only a small portion of the incident was captured and publicly shared, leading to misunderstandings regarding the circumstances.
Fortunately for Ritchson, he had taken the precaution of recording the incident from his own perspective, using a chest camera that he later provided to authorities. This crucial evidence ultimately led to the police determining that Ritchson’s actions were in self-defence, and no criminal charges were brought against him. He stated, “If I hadn’t had that, I’d probably still be in jail.”
The repercussions of the incident extended beyond immediate physical concerns. Ritchson revealed that his children have since been hesitant to ride with him, a significant loss for the family dynamic that he feels was unjustly taken from them. The actor admitted that he worried about the potential long-term impact of the incident on his career and personal life, fearing he might not work again due to public perception.
Brentwood Police Captain Steven Pepin clarified in March that there were no criminal charges filed against Ritchson, confirming that the investigation supported his claim of acting in self-defence. While initially considering charges of reckless endangerment against the neighbour, those were not pursued, as Ritchson chose not to press charges.
Reflecting on the experience, Ritchson concluded that he was left with the feeling of unresolved issues stemming from the altercation. Although he aims to move on, the actor acknowledged the psychological toll the events had taken on him and the adjustments his family was forced to make as a result. The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of encounters and the importance of taking precautions to protect oneself and loved ones in potentially volatile situations.
