Colin Bales, a 31-year-old physical therapist from Minnesota, is currently on a challenging road to recovery following a severe spinal cord injury sustained during a diving accident on the Fourth of July. The day was initially meant to be a celebration, but everything shifted drastically when Colin dived into the lake and hit a shallow area, resulting in a life-altering injury.

After being rescued from the water, Colin remained conscious and was able to communicate until paramedics arrived. He was then airlifted to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, North Dakota, where he underwent emergency surgery to stabilise his spine. Following more than two weeks in the intensive care unit, Colin was transferred to Craig Hospital in Denver, renowned for its specialised spinal cord rehabilitation.

While Amy acknowledges the enormity of the challenges ahead, she remains hopeful. “Because his injury is still so recent, it’s too early for doctors to give an official prognosis or know the full extent of his recovery,” she explained. At present, the focus lies on managing Colin’s medical needs and aiding his rehabilitation, which includes multiple daily therapies aimed at restoring function. “Every day is filled with physical therapy, occupational therapy, respiratory therapy, nursing care, and careful monitoring,” Amy added.

Amy noted, “We’ve been completely overwhelmed by the generosity we’ve experienced.”
