As people age, many find that cherished activities and passions gradually fade into the background, often overshadowed by health issues, time constraints, or life circumstances. It is this sentiment that sparked the creation of ‘Like Old Times’, a moving video series that helps seniors reconnect with their younger selves through experiences they thought were long behind them. Structured around the transformative stories of older adults, the series has gained recognition for its heartwarming approach and was honoured with a Webby award.

Founded by Vin Nucatola and hosted by Johnny Gaffney, ‘Like Old Times’ debuted in November 2025. The series invigorates forgotten passions by spotlighting seniors as they relive long-lost activities, from disco dancing to blind dates. Its popularity has soared, amassing over 315,000 followers across platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
In an exclusive interview, Nucatola recounted how the concept for the show originated from observing a group of older adults outside a retirement community. “I wondered how many of them had hobbies or interests they once loved that had faded away,” he said. This reflection became the catalyst for a series aiming to celebrate aging and foster meaningful connections.
Each episode is structured around a central inquiry: “What is something you used to love doing that you haven’t done in a long time?” The team endeavours to make that dream a reality for participants. Nucatola emphasised that the moments captured on camera are genuine, stating, “Although every reveal requires planning, the authenticity of the experiences shines through.”
Since its launch, ‘Like Old Times’ has fostered memorable moments, including the story of 78-year-old Lenny, affectionately dubbed “Fastball Lenny.” A former minor league baseball player, he hadn’t pitched for over fifty years until the team arranged a game for him. Gaffney noted, “When we provided Lenny with new baseball gear and a chance to return to the diamond, he transformed. It was as though the competitive athlete within him re-emerged and he truly came alive again.”
Another poignant story involved 75-year-old “Uncle Sal,” a devoted fan of the New York Knicks. Nucatola and his team surprised him with tickets to Madison Square Garden, an experience he hadn’t had for more than five decades. Furthermore, the joy was amplified as Sal met his idol, Walt “Clyde” Frazier. “He never imagined he would have the chance to witness the Knicks again, let alone meet his hero,” recounted Nucatola, reflecting on the impact of such moments.
The mission of ‘Like Old Times’ extends beyond entertainment; it aims to reshape societal perceptions of ageing. Gaffney articulated his belief that older adults are often undervalued, stating, “Many have devoted their lives to raising families and contributing to their communities, but suddenly find themselves sidelined.” He believes this oversight is unjust, emphasising that age should not diminish one’s capability for creativity or enjoyment.
As Nucatola and Gaffney spent more time with participants, they realised that fostering connection and reminiscing about past experiences were just as vital as the activities themselves. “They don’t merely miss the pastimes but also the camaraderie, laughter, and sense of belonging that accompanied those cherished memories,” Nucatola warned. Hence, each episode strives to rekindle not only activities but also friendships and social bonds.
The overarching aim of the series is to reinvigorate a sense of self worth and possibility among its participants. Gaffney expressed a hope that each person walks away having rediscovered an aspect of themselves they thought was lost. “If they leave with rejuvenated confidence, joy, or a sense of adventure, then our goal has been achieved,” he explained.
As ‘Like Old Times’ continues to grow in popularity, both creators aspire to inspire younger generations to view ageing through a new lens. Nucatola concluded, “For our younger viewers, we want to convey that just because you age, it does not mean you must abandon what brings you joy. We aim to demonstrate that joy, purpose, and adventure can be embraced at any stage of life.”
In a world that often overlooks the older generation, ‘Like Old Times’ serves as a vital reminder of the importance of connection and joy in the later years. The show not only uplifts its participants but also encourages others to create similar moments of joy and togetherness with their loved ones.
