Speaking to *People*, the writer explained that this book continues the story from his first children’s book, *Trick or Treat on Scary Street*, and introduces readers to a new setting called Pine Cone Lane.
“What’s great is it’s a continuation of the Halloween book,” Bass remarked, adding that the striking black cat from his earlier story reappears as Santa Claus’ feline companion. He playfully reframes the narrative, suggesting that while everyone believes Mrs. Claus is married to Santa, the truth is much more amusing: “It’s actually his cat, Mrs. Claws. And that’s who we leave the milk out for.”
The book holds special significance for Bass, who dedicated it to his four-year-old twins, Alexander James and Violet Betty. In a candid moment, he shared that he forgot to include them in the dedication for his debut book, which has since prompted a heartfelt commitment to include them in this latest story, making them characters within its pages. “That was my bad,” he confessed, with a laugh, acknowledging his eagerness to make it up to his children.
As his twins reach an age of understanding, they are starting to comprehend the connection between their bedtime stories and their father’s role as the author. Bass noted, “I think it’s just starting to be cool because they’re 4 years old, so now they’re just kind of realising like, ‘Oh wait, that book you’ve been reading me for three years now, you wrote that.’”
Despite *Trick or Treat on Scary Street* being a Halloween-themed book, Bass revealed that it has become a favourite for year-round reading, relished by children including his friends’ offspring. “It’s definitely one of those year-round things,” he commented, noting how friends continue to enjoy the story even in the summer months.
In anticipation of sharing his new work, Bass was waiting for the physical copies of *The Legend of Mrs. Claws* to arrive. Now that he has the book in hand, he expressed excitement about introducing it to his children. “So now that it is here, I think tonight is going to be our first night to have a nice little reading of it,” he shared, highlighting his enthusiasm for creating festive family moments amidst the summer heat.
Bass is also juggling various roles beyond writing. Recently appointed as QVC’s Co-Chief Cheer Officer, he has teamed up with his long-time friend Danielle Fishel to host the channel’s Christmas in July celebrations.
