A man has been charged with two counts of murder following a tragic traffic incident that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her young daughter on a California highway last December. The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office announced on July 17 that Zachary Chernicky, 31, was allegedly driving recklessly at the time of the fatal crash.

The harrowing incident occurred on December 2, 2022, when 29-year-old Ivana Balistreri and her daughter, Lilliana, who was just two days shy of her second birthday, were travelling on a busy highway in San Jose. Reports indicate that Chernicky was behind the wheel of a Tesla, allegedly speeding at over twice the legal limit when he collided with their vehicle. This collision was severe enough to cause significant fire damage to both Balistreri’s car and another vehicle nearby.
