Famous Bald Eagle Mom Jackie, Who Was Feared Dead, Is Rescued Alive Days After Her Disappearance

A beloved bald eagle, known as Jackie, has been rescued near Big Bear Lake in California after disappearing for several days, leading to widespread concern among her admirers. The County of Los Angeles Department of Parks & Recreation (LADPR) announced the successful rescue on July 19, when the eagle was found struggling on the ground and subsequently taken for care.

Jackie first gained fame through a live stream that showcased her nesting habits with her partner, Shadow. The startling news of her disappearance caused alarm among viewers who had formed a tight-knit community around watching the couple raise their eaglets, named Sandy and Luna. Fortunately, during her rescue, Jackie was found by the Los Angeles San Dimas Raptor Rescue Team and was filmed being carried away for treatment.

The rescue footage highlights the initial discovery of the eagle, who had waded into water and appeared disoriented. “Wildlife conservation takes teamwork,” remarked the rescue team in their social media posts, underscoring the collective effort to ensure that Jackie received the prompt care she required. After being stabilised, the eagle was transported to a specialist rehabilitation facility for ongoing treatment and monitoring.

The Friends of Big Bear Valley (FOBBV), an organisation closely associated with Jackie and Shadow, expressed hope that the injured eagle is indeed their beloved Jackie. The group confirmed their identification based on public videos and images, affirming that Jackie is in “the best place she can be” for her recovery. They continue to await updates from the rehabilitation centre on her condition.

Following expert assessments, it was revealed that during her absence, Jackie had encountered aggressive interactions with other birds, which might explain her injuries and inability to fly. Despite not suffering from broken bones or serious conditions, Jackie was found to be underweight, which indicates she had been struggling at a crucial time for her health.

Since April, Jackie and Shadow have been caring for their two eaglets; however, with Jackie now in rehabilitation, Shadow has taken on the full responsibility of raising Sandy and Luna. This unexpected turn of events has prompted FOBBV to rally behind Shadow, praising him as an “excellent mate and father,” and commending his efforts to protect their nest and territory.

As for Jackie’s future, it remains uncertain when she might be able to return to the wild. Experts at the Ojai Raptor Center, where she is currently housed, will continue to provide the necessary care and will keep the public informed on her status as diagnostic results are awaited. FOBBV has reassured the community that Jackie is stable and receiving specialised attention.
