A devastating flash flood in southern Utah has claimed the lives of a firefighter, his wife, and their three young sons while they were hiking on Friday, July 17. The family has been identified as Captain Spencer Long, who served with Provo Fire & Rescue, his spouse, and their children. Notably, one of their daughters was not present during the outing.

The tragic event unfolded near the Sunglow Campground area. Authorities believe the family arrived at the site at approximately 11:30 a.m. They had been exploring the canyons close to Bicknell when they were caught in a sudden downpour. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office stated it received a report of a body discovered around 5 p.m. on the same day, prompting deputies to head to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered the body of a young male in a wash near the campground. This led to the activation of Wayne County Search and Rescue, who combed the area for any other potential victims in what was presumed to be a missing family group.
As the search efforts intensified, they uncovered two additional deceased males in the same wash, leading investigators to believe that the family had tragically fallen victim to the fierce flooding caused by the heavy rainfall.
