Initial reports indicate that the explosion, which was powerful enough to be felt up to five kilometres away, damaged nearby structures and scorched agricultural land in the vicinity. Eyewitness accounts describe an ear-piercing blast followed by thick black smoke rising from the site, as emergency responders worked tirelessly to recover those trapped in the debris and transport the injured to local hospitals, including the Civil Hospital and LG Hospital in Maninagar.

Ahmedabad’s Commissioner of Police, Jaipal Singh Rathod, revealed that the fireworks were being manufactured in an open area without proper licensing. He stated, “The license issued to the operator had already been cancelled. Despite this, the firecracker unit continued functioning illegally.” This raises significant questions about regulatory oversight and the enforcement of safety protocols in the fireworks industry, especially in a region where such operations can pose severe risks to public safety.

Authorities have taken decisive action following the explosion, detaining Mehul Dodiya, the factory owner, for questioning. In addition, police have identified two other suspects, including Dodiya’s mother, Ramilaben Dodiya, and his business partner, Sadiq Saiyed. The trio is accused of illegally operating a fireworks production facility on rented land, contravening the law following the cancellation of their manufacturing license.
Crime Branch Joint Commissioner Sharad Singhal confirmed that a legal case has been initiated under the Explosives Act. He stressed that all individuals associated with the illegal operation of the factory will face prosecution. “Everyone involved — the factory operator, property owner, partners, and any others connected with this illegal operation — will be arrested and prosecuted,” Singhal stated firmly.
In an expression of solidarity with the victims’ families, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences, stating, “I am extremely saddened to hear about the loss of lives due to a mishap at a fireworks factory in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. My thoughts are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.” Modi also announced that families of the deceased would receive financial assistance of ₹50,000 (approximately £520) to aid them in their time of need.
Local authorities, including the Ramol Police and the Ahmedabad Fire Department, have engaged in rigorous rescue operations and investigations following the explosion. The extent of the incident underscores the dangers associated with fireworks manufacturing, particularly in unregulated settings that fail to adhere to safety standards.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of operating without proper licensing and oversight. The community is now left to confront the aftermath of this tragedy, with many residents expressing concerns over safety practices in proximity to residential areas.
The loss of life and injuries sustained in this incident have raised urgent calls for stricter enforcement of safety regulations in the fireworks industry, highlighting the need for greater accountability to prevent such occurrences in the future.
