Collin Gosselin’s recently published memoir, *In the Shadow of Eight: Surviving the Reality of My Childhood*, has sparked renewed tensions within the Gosselin family as it includes serious allegations against his mother, Kate Gosselin. The memoir, released in October 2026, asserts that Kate subjected Collin to physical and emotional abuse during his early years, a claim she has consistently refuted.

The Gosselin family first came into the public eye through TLC’s reality series *Jon & Kate Plus 8*, which showcased the challenges of parenting eight children—twins Mady and Cara, alongside sextuplets Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah, and Joel. Following the couple’s divorce in 2009, the once close-knit family dynamic began to unravel, leading to public disputes and shifting allegiances among the children.

While some siblings have maintained strong ties with Kate, others, including Collin and his sister Hannah, opted to live with their father, Jon Gosselin, during their teenage years. This division has not only affected parent-child relationships but has also extended to the brothers and sisters, with Collin publicly expressing his feelings about the growing estrangement. In a TikTok live from August 2025, he admitted, “I don’t talk to my siblings, and I very much wish that we did… we don’t know each other at all,” referring to interactions outside of Hannah.

The memoir’s allegations include troubling claims of abuse, such as Collin’s assertion that he was confined to a basement room for considerable periods of his childhood. He recounts a specific incident where he was restrained with zip ties after returning home from a runaway attempt, alleging that his mother subsequently had him placed in a behavioural health facility at the age of 11. In this facility, Collin claims to have suffered additional mistreatment, including derogatory comments from staff. His mother, however, has maintained that the measures taken in their home were in line with professional recommendations to address what she described as Collin’s special needs.
Collin’s father, Jon, was awarded custody of him in 2018, allowing Collin to reside with Jon and Hannah. Kate has publicly responded to the claims in Collin’s memoir, arguing on social media that sensible individuals would understand her perspective, asserting that she had “nothing to do with it.”
Amid these family tensions, Jon has shared that he has not spoken to his twin daughters, Cara and Mady, in over a decade. After their parents’ separation, the twins chose to live primarily with Kate and have largely remained out of the public eye. Their relationship with Jon has deteriorated, with Mady recently defending Kate against Collin’s allegations. She described her brother as having “physically threatened” her and exhibiting violent behaviour, stating that reconciliation is no longer an option.
Meanwhile, Hannah, who moved in with Jon, has maintained a more stable relationship with both parents. She revealed in a 2022 interview that she communicates regularly with Kate, stating, “My relationship with my mom is pretty stable.” Hannah’s bond with Jon is strong, as evidenced by her attendance at his wedding to Stephanie Lebo in 2025.
The other four Gosselin children—Aaden, Leah, Alexis, and Joel—have remained mostly out of the limelight and continue to live primarily with Kate. Jon has expressed that he feels estranged from them, claiming that the conflicts with Kate have complicated their relationship during their formative years.
As Collin and his siblings enter adulthood, the Gosselin family dynamics remain fraught with tension and complexity. The release of Collin’s memoir has opened old wounds, revealing the struggles not just of a child in a reality TV family but also highlighting how emotional legacies can shape adult relationships. The future of these connections appears uncertain as each member seeks their own truth amidst the shadows of their shared past.
