According to San Francisco Fire Lieutenant Mariano Elias, the vessel, a sizeable 50-foot cabin cruiser, began to take on water approximately 600 yards from the island. Initial reports suggested a fire on board, but Elias clarified that this was caused by steam from the engine meeting the water, rather than an actual blaze. The boat was registered in Stockton, California.

The cruise departed from near the St. Francis Yacht Club, as stated by San Francisco Fire Chief Dean Crispen during a press briefing. The situation escalated rapidly, leading to the boat capsizing in the choppy waters of the bay.
Upon receiving emergency calls, rescuers arrived on the scene to find chaos, as Lieutenant Elias reported that several individuals were scattered in the water. While the authorities were able to locate one severely injured victim, the individual unfortunately succumbed to their injuries after being transported to a local hospital. In addition, three other individuals were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment after being thrown into the water during the incident.
The rescue operation was extensive, with 13 people being successfully brought to safety. However, the loss of life was further compounded by the death of the dog on board. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed publicly.
As day turned into night, search efforts continued as the San Francisco Fire Department, supported by the U.S. Coast Guard and local police units, worked tirelessly to locate the missing individuals. Fire Chief Crispen assured the media that the operation would proceed as long as conditions allowed, despite the challenges posed by windy weather.
“This is a thorough response to a tragic incident,” he said, emphasising the determination of the rescuers. “We are committed to finding these two missing people if conditions permit.”
In the search, divers, eleven boats, and helicopters have all been deployed, scouring the area where the boat sank to a depth of 120 feet below the surface. The continued operation reflects the urgency and importance of locating the missing individuals.
As the search operations extended into the evening, the community held its breath, hopeful for news of the missing. The Oakland Police Department’s Marine Unit also joined the effort, underscoring the collaborative approach among various agencies in response to this maritime tragedy.
Authorities are maintaining an active presence on the water, balancing hopes of finding survivors with the reality of the situation. Chief Crispen reassured those present that the search would persist overnight, contingent on safety measures.
The distressing incident has drawn attention to the safety of recreational boating in local waters, prompting discussions around precautionary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. As the community rallies together during this difficult time, eyes remain fixed on the bay, awaiting developments in the ongoing recovery efforts.
