L7 bassist Jennifer Finch has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer, as announced by the iconic grunge band in a heartfelt statement on their official social media platforms on Monday, 13 July. The news has prompted both an outpouring of support from fans and the band’s initiative to raise funds to assist with her medical expenses.

In their Instagram post, the band expressed their deep concern for Finch, stating, “Our beloved bandmate, sister and friend Jennifer Finch has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.” Following her diagnosis, Finch faced numerous surgeries and complications that have necessitated extensive medical care and rehabilitation. Consequently, she will not be participating in L7’s impending ‘Last Hurrah Tour.’
This tour had been planned when all four members were in good health, but Finch’s current condition has led her to step back from the road. Despite her absence, she has encouraged her bandmates to continue without her, emphasising her desire for them to uphold the tour.

The band members reiterated their commitment to Finch’s care, stating, “We will honour her request while making her care and well-being our immediate priority.” They expressed their love for her and their wish for her to feel the support of the community that has backed her for years.
To support Finch during this challenging time, L7, alongside her friends and family, has launched a GoFundMe campaign, which has already amassed over $197,000 of its $350,000 goal. The funds are intended to cover a range of urgent expenses, including professional nursing care, physical therapy, speech therapy, medical equipment, and other essential resources required for her comfort and dignity.
The GoFundMe campaign details Finch’s initial hope for recovery, stating, “When she first heard the diagnosis, there was reason to believe that treatment, including a full course of radiation, would get her back to some version of normal living.” However, complications have arisen, leading to multiple surgeries and unforeseen hurdles in her treatment journey.
In addition to her medical care, the fundraiser aims to support the completion of a significant creative project that Finch had scheduled for release next year. The campaign also seeks to recoup out-of-pocket medical expenses and legal fees, whilst helping to preserve her artistic legacy through an archival project of her work.
As the reality of her condition sets in, Finch’s friends and family are increasingly aware that she may have more challenging days ahead of her than behind. As such, they are asking for community assistance to ensure her remaining time is filled with comfort, love, and support from those around her.
L7, formed in Los Angeles in 1985, includes guitarist and vocalist Suzi Gardner, guitarist and vocalist Donita Sparks, and drummer Dee Plakas, alongside Finch. The band has been a staple of the grunge and riot grrrl movements since the 1990s, known for their influential tracks such as “Pretend We’re Dead” and “Wargasm.” After a hiatus from 2001 until 2014, L7 is preparing to hit the road once again with their Last Hurrah Tour, set to kick off in San Diego on 6 October.
As the band gears up for this tour, they remain focused on Finch’s journey and well-being. The community surrounding L7, including fans and friends alike, has shown tremendous solidarity in her time of need, embodying the spirit of support that has characterised much of the band’s legacy over the years.
People magazine has reached out for additional comments from a representative for Finch as her journey continues to unfold.
