Founded in April 2021, Underground Overground Comedy was created as a response to the limitations on live performances during the COVID-19 pandemic. As lifelong friends and New Yorkers, Mansoor and Levine sought to bring laughter to audiences in unique and unexpected venues. Their prior comedy shows have taken place in locations such as laundromats, barbershops, and even the renowned Katz’s Delicatessen.

With the success of their comedy venture under their belts, the duo recognised the potential for something more. “After many of our comedy shows, we’d invite magicians for after-parties and noticed the audience’s enthusiasm,” explained Mansoor. “It became clear that we needed to take it further.” Levine elaborated, stating, “There aren’t many magic shows in New York City, and we realised the opportunity to intertwine magic with our unique event locations felt right.”
The upcoming magic performances promise an eclectic mix, from intricate card tricks to daring sword swallowing acts, featuring a rotating roster of promising young magicians. Mansoor cited the impact of comedian Marcello Hernández, who began his journey with them when he was relatively unknown. “Today, he’s experienced significant growth in his career, and we believe that many of the magicians we are working with have the same potential,” he said.
The upcoming magic events will be staged in similarly surprising venues. “The next shows are set to take place in a downtown scuba shop, an abandoned barbecue restaurant in Williamsburg, and the celebrated Zabar’s on the Upper West Side,” noted Levine, who is also directly involved in the logistics of finding these unique locations. “I actively seek out venues, often knocking on doors, and if the response is slow, I bring along a magician with a deck of cards in hopes of securing a booking.”
Despite their growing successes, both Mansoor and Levine remain hands-on in the process. Mansoor, who is also pursuing a career in dentistry, shared his balancing act: “Mornings are spent seeing patients in scrubs, and then I switch to a venue outfit in the afternoon.” Their dedication to their craft reflects their commitment to nurturing a vibrant performance landscape in the city.
As they venture into this new artistic realm, the duo acknowledges that their journey is still in the early stages. “This is something we’re doing for enjoyment, but it’s become more serious over time,” shared Mansoor. “If you’d asked us five years ago where we’d be today, we would never have imagined this.”
“We face uncertainty, but we believe in our vision,” Levine added. “I quip that I’m unhireable, so the stakes are high for us. However, I envision a bright future, not only in magic but also in digital content and expansion into new cities.” Their confidence stems from the passion and effort they continue to pour into their work, believing that consistent progress will yield fruitful outcomes.
As Underground Overground Magic prepares to captivate audiences, the excitement is palpable. With their unique approach to showcasing both comedy and magic in unexpected places, Mansoor and Levine are poised to create memorable experiences for attendees throughout New York City. With a dream that remains alive and flourishing, the duo’s journey is a testament to the power of camaraderie and creativity in the face of adversity.
