A man’s incredible survival story at sea has captured the hearts of many, as he recalls how he managed to stay alive for more than 90 days lost in the vast ocean by clinging to thoughts of his mother. Máximo Napa Castro embarked on a fishing expedition from Marcona in Peru on December 7, 2024. Unfortunately, his voyage took a perilous turn when stormy weather caused his boat to drift aimlessly just 10 days into what was supposed to be a two-week trip. With no means of communication or navigation, Castro’s situation quickly turned dire.

The 61-year-old man was eventually discovered by an Ecuadorian fishing patrol vessel approximately 388 miles off the port of Chimbote on March 11, as reported by national news agency RPP and CNN. When Castro was rescued, he was severely dehydrated and in critical condition, highlighting the immense challenges he faced during his harrowing ordeal. After his rescue, he was promptly taken for medical evaluations at the Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes Hospital in Paita, where his condition was assessed and stabilized.

Upon his arrival at the Jorge Chávez International Airport, an emotional reunion awaited Castro as he was greeted by his ecstatic family on Saturday, March 15. Speaking to CNN, Castro expressed his unwavering determination to survive, revealing, “I said I didn’t want to die for my mother. I have a granddaughter who is a few months old. I held on for her. Every day, I thought of my mother.” His resilience and love for his family undoubtedly played a crucial role in his survival against all odds.

During an interview with local media, Castro disclosed the extreme measures he took to sustain himself while adrift at sea. He recounted relying on rainwater collected on the boat, consuming insects, birds, and even a turtle to stave off starvation. In a poignant revelation, Castro shared that he hadn’t eaten for the last 15 days prior to being rescued, underlining the extreme conditions he endured to stay alive. Reflecting on his ingenuity, he mentioned how the turtle’s blood became a crucial source of sustenance, providing him with a lifeline in his darkest moments.
Castro’s miraculous survival sparked a wave of relief and gratitude within his family, who had been anxiously searching for him since his disappearance in December. His daughter, Inés Napa, expressed her heartfelt gratitude towards those involved in her father’s rescue in a touching Facebook post. The unwavering faith and determination exhibited by Castro’s loved ones throughout the arduous search underscored the power of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
As Castro readjusts to normalcy following his extraordinary rescue, he eagerly looks forward to reuniting with his family and indulging in the comforting embrace of his mother. Describing his first meal post-rescue, Castro joyfully shared, “Today I ate rice with chicken and beans… My mom is going to make me carapulcra, rice with chicken, and sopa seca.” His poignant reunion and optimistic outlook serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, emphasizing the enduring strength of the human spirit in overcoming incredible challenges.
