Actor Luke Wilson has shared his surprising experience of being stuck in an elevator for approximately thirty minutes with esteemed directors Wes Anderson and James L. Brooks. This incident, which took place at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles on July 6, has since generated significant media coverage, much to Wilson’s astonishment.

Speaking to PEOPLE at the premiere of his new Netflix series, *The Hawk*, on July 9, the 54-year-old actor expressed disbelief that the elevator incident garnered such attention, contrasting it with the low-key reception of many of his past film projects. “It’s like there are movies I’ve worked on and worked really hard on, and they’ve come and gone without a trace,” he remarked. “And then I get stuck in an elevator for half an hour and it’s news across the country.”

Reflecting on the situation, Wilson highlighted the positive aspect of sharing the experience with two reputable filmmakers. “I was on there with a couple of good people, a couple of great directors,” he noted, referring to Anderson and Brooks. However, as the minutes passed in the confined space, Wilson admitted that his initial appreciation for their company waned. “But roundabout the half-hour mark, I really didn’t give a damn who I was with. I just wanted some fresh air.”
The trio had just marked the 30th anniversary of Anderson’s film *Bottle Rocket* before the unexpected elevator malfunction occurred. After a successful celebration, the Los Angeles Fire Department was called to rescue the trapped occupants. After their liberation, Wilson, Anderson, and Brooks managed to enjoy a pleasant dinner together, despite the earlier mishap.
A video shared on social media by Carolyn Dunn, a production specialist at 20th Century Fox, depicted Anderson and Brooks emerging from the elevator after the firefighters managed to open the doors. In a light-hearted exchange, Anderson inquired about the cause of the malfunction, to which a firefighter suggested, “Probably had too much weight in there.” Anderson, maintaining his trademark wit, responded, “Okay, thank you very much.”
Beyond this unexpected adventure, Wilson is promoting his role in the upcoming Netflix series *The Hawk*, which also features notable stars such as Will Ferrell, Chris Parnell, and Molly Shannon. The series follows Ferrell’s character, Lonnie the Hawk, a former golfer seeking redemption, while Wilson portrays Golden Fisk, a talented golfer who has bested Lonnie on two occasions.
At the premiere, Wilson expressed how enjoyable it was to reconnect with familiar faces from his acting career. “It’s one of those things where you realise how long you’ve been in the business. Not just Will, but people on the crew,” he commented. The actor noted that his extensive experience in the industry has enriched his relationships and interactions, bringing a sense of nostalgia and camaraderie to the set.
“I’ve been doing this for over 30 years now. So to get the chance to go back and work with people, you’re a little older, but you realise that people are still the same in all the best ways. And somebody like Will, where you can see here at this premiere, he’s an international superstar,” he added, reflecting on the enduring nature of these connections.
*The Hawk* is set to debut on Netflix on July 16, promising audiences a blend of comedy and heartfelt moments in line with Wilson’s established career. As he navigates both the spotlight of his new series and the unusual tales brought about by his recent elevator escapade, Wilson’s charisma and charm continue to resonate in Hollywood.
