The remains were uncovered by a shed hunter and family members on March 28 in the Swamp Creek area, located near Waha, Idaho. Authorities were alerted to the discovery when the group encountered what they believed to be a human skull and other bone fragments. Following the report, deputies from the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office along with K-9 units returned to the site the following day to recover the remains.

Once secured, the remains were forwarded to the Spokane Medical Examiner’s Office for analysis. Using historical medical imaging, officials were able to confirm that the remains belonged to Sloan. Notably, Sloan was not a local resident and had been reported missing after failing to communicate with family members.
Sloan’s last known whereabouts were significant, with photos taken of him at a location over 10 miles from where his abandoned pickup truck was later found stuck in Wapshilla Ridge. His disappearance initiated a broad search effort; however, despite the additional footage found in spring 2022 by officials with Idaho Fish and Game, no traces of Sloan were discovered. The search was eventually suspended due to the lack of further evidence.
The sheriff’s office released a statement expressing their condolences to Sloan’s family and their gratitude to the public for reporting the find, as well as for the support received throughout the lengthy investigation. The cooperation from local volunteers and authorities played a critical role in the recovery efforts.
This tragic case highlights the challenges faced by families of missing persons and the importance of thorough investigations. The identification of the remains not only offers a resolution to Sloan’s family but also raises awareness about ongoing issues regarding cultural sensitivity and the need for improved resources for dealing with missing person cases.
As investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Sloan’s disappearance, law enforcement remains committed to ensuring that justice is served. The sentiments shared by the Nez Perce County Sheriff’s Office reflect a community grappling with the harsh reality of loss while recognising the collaborative efforts that led to the eventual identification of Allan Sloan.
In the wake of this discovery, it is vital for authorities and community members alike to remain vigilant in helping those who find themselves in similar situations. Sustaining support systems for families of missing individuals can make a crucial difference when it comes to the outcomes of these distressing cases.
