An American nurse from Portland, Oregon, has tragically been found dead following her disappearance from a nightclub in Budapest. Mackenzie “Kenzie” Michalski, aged 31, was last seen on November 5, 2024, during a holiday to Hungary. The case has garnered attention and concern, culminating in the arrest and conviction of a suspect in her murder.

The investigation began shortly after Michalski vanished from the bustling late-night venue. Friends and family initiated a vigorous search, utilising social media campaigns to raise awareness and seek assistance in locating her. Unfortunately, after days of hunting, Budapest’s VI District Police announced on November 8, 2024, that Michalski had been found deceased and a suspect was in custody.
The individual arrested in connection with her death has been identified only by the initials “LTM” and, at the time of the incident, was a 37-year-old Irish citizen. Authorities reported that he confessed to the murder, providing details that led police to the area where he disposed of Michalski’s body.

On July 9, 2026, the Budapest Metropolitan Court delivered its verdict, finding the suspect guilty of murder. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison with no option of parole. This decision followed a thorough investigation that revealed Michalski had been seen in the company of the suspect at various nightclubs prior to her disappearance.
According to police, the suspect and Michalski reportedly met and danced together before he took her to his apartment. It was there that he admitted to beating and strangling her during what he described as an “intimate encounter.” In a destructive attempt to cover up the murder, he attempted to cleanse the crime scene and hid her body in a wardrobe cabinet. Following this, he purchased a suitcase, into which he placed her remains.
In a shocking revelation, the suspect drove approximately 90 miles from Budapest to Lake Balaton, where he abandoned the suitcase in a wooded area outside the town of Szigliget. Investigators discovered that he had conducted various online searches related to body disposal techniques and the decomposition of corpses, as well as inquiries into police procedures involving missing persons.
After serving his sentence, the convicted murderer is set to be expelled from Hungary. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay 2.5 million forints, roughly equivalent to £6,500, in court-related expenses. While this case has concluded in a conviction, it is not without controversy; the suspect’s attorney has lodged an appeal against the ruling.
The tragic death of Mackenzie Michalski highlights the critical issue of safety for travellers abroad, particularly young women. As loved ones mourn her loss, the case has raised awareness around potential dangers in nightlife settings and the importance of vigilance when enjoying time in unfamiliar environments.
Much of the public response has focused on ensuring justice is served and preventing similar tragedies in the future. Community campaigns have emerged to support victims of violence and enhance awareness of safe practices during travel, echoing calls for better resources and education aimed at safeguarding vulnerable individuals.
As this story unfolds, it serves as a stark reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can arise during travel. Grieving friends and family continue to seek closure, while authorities remain vigilant in pursuit of safety and justice for all.
