Authorities in Pennsylvania have charged two caregivers with serious offences related to the alleged abuse and neglect of a 20-year-old woman with Down syndrome. The accused, Yahnae Clegg-Brown, 31, and her partner Naiyr “Hasan” Sanders, 35, were taken into custody on 7 July and face multiple charges, including neglect and abuse of a care-dependent person.

The investigation into the couple’s actions commenced on 25 April when emergency services received reports of what appeared to be a juvenile weeping outside a residence in Colwyn, Pennsylvania. When officials arrived, they found that the individual was, in fact, a young woman who had been left outside in cold, rainy conditions. It was reported that temperatures hovered around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, with steady rainfall contributing to the dire situation.
Upon assessment, officers discovered the woman was soaked through, clutching a garbage bag filled with clothes, and exhibiting numerous injuries, including trauma around her right eye and multiple bruises on her body, along with signs of severe malnourishment. Medical teams were summoned after she disclosed her injuries to the authorities.
Prosecutors have outlined a disturbing pattern of behaviour against the victim, alleging she was routinely denied food and subjected to physical violence whenever her caregivers disapproved of her actions. Court documents describe a living environment consisting of a room with bunk beds, where the mattress was in disrepair and lacked basic bedding necessities such as sheets, blankets, or pillows.
The Delaware County District Attorney’s Office revealed that investigators had uncovered video footage purportedly showing Sanders engaging in violent acts against the woman. One clip reportedly captures him pushing her down a flight of concrete steps and slamming the door in her face, while another allegedly depicts him striking her on the right side of her face.
Adding to the gravity of the situation, it has been reported that the victim suffers from diabetes. During her time in the care of Clegg-Brown and Sanders, she is believed to have lost approximately 50 pounds, leading to her current weight of around 82 pounds.
Following her rescue, the woman was transported to a medical facility, and she is now recuperating in a safe environment, away from her previous living conditions. The case has raised alarms regarding the treatment of vulnerable individuals and the obligations of caregivers to provide safe and loving environments.
Both Clegg-Brown and Sanders remain in custody, as they were unable to post bail, which was set at 10% of $250,000. They are scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on 16 July. The case has garnered attention, as advocates for individuals with disabilities call for heightened scrutiny of caregiver practices.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to delve deeper into the circumstances that led to the alleged maltreatment of the young woman. Community members, along with advocacy groups, are calling for justice and are committed to ensuring that similar cases are prevented in the future.
This incident highlights the crucial need for monitoring and improving the standards of care provided to individuals with disabilities, as they often rely heavily on their caregivers for protection, respect, and dignity. As the judicial process unfolds, the hope remains that the victim will receive the support and care she needs to heal and recover.
