Renowned actor Jesse L. Martin recently shared the intriguing story behind his rise to fame on the iconic television show “Law & Order.” The 57-year-old star, known for his compelling performances, revealed that rather than auditioning for the role of Detective Ed Green, he landed the part through an intriguing series of connections and a bold leap of faith.

Martin’s entry into the “Law & Order” franchise began when he learned of an opening for Detective Rey Curtis, a role previously held by Benjamin Bratt. This news came from a friend who suggested that Martin would be a perfect fit for the job. “I don’t know what you want to do with that information, but I know that’s a great gig and that you would love to do something like that,” Martin recounted, reflecting on his friend’s suggestion.

At that time, Martin was enjoying success in Los Angeles as part of the cast of “Ally McBeal.” However, the prospect of joining the long-running procedural drama sparked his interest immediately. “I called my manager and asked if he knew producer Dick Wolf,” Martin explained. Although his manager did not have personal contact with Wolf, he agreed to facilitate a connection.
Soon thereafter, Martin found himself in a meeting with the formidable producer. He candidly expressed his desire for the role, which led to an unexpected turn of events. “Next thing you know, I was in Dick Wolf’s office telling him basically that I wanted the job,” he shared. Despite being questioned about how he had heard of the opening, Martin chose to keep that information to himself, opting instead to present a convincing case for why he should be cast.
Wolf was initially inclined to arrange a screen test with Jerry Orbach, the actor playing Detective Lennie Briscoe, but in a surprising turn, Martin was cast without ever having to audition alongside Orbach. “One thing led to another, and we never even met in the room,” he noted, emphasising the unusual circumstances that led to him securing the role.
Martin stepped into the shoes of Detective Ed Green at the age of 30, a moment he describes as a significant milestone in his career. “I think I was either 29 or 30. It was obviously a big deal,” he reflected, highlighting the magnitude of a role on such a prestigious show. Joining a cast that included acting luminaries such as S. Epatha Merkerson and Sam Waterston added an extra layer of excitement and trepidation for the young actor.
Despite his enthusiasm, Martin admitted to feeling apprehensive about fitting in with the experienced ensemble. “What if we don’t get along?” he recalled, candidly expressing the anxiety of stepping into a well-established group. “It was instantly humbling,” he said, recognising the need to navigate this new environment with humility and commitment.
Fortunately, his fellow cast members were welcoming and supportive. Martin spoke fondly of S. Epatha Merkerson, who he said took him under her wing and helped him acclimatise to the show’s demanding pace. “Luckily, people were very welcoming,” he recalled, grateful for the camaraderie that developed on set.
Over the course of nine seasons, Martin portrayed Detective Ed Green in a total of 198 episodes, also reprising the role in spin-offs “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” His performance earned him acclaim and helped solidify his position within the realm of television drama, leaving an indelible mark on the iconic franchise.
Reflecting on his journey, Martin’s tale serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of Hollywood and how networking, determination, and taking risks can lead to remarkable opportunities. As he reminisces about his time on “Law & Order,” it is clear that his experience not only shaped his career but also cultivated lasting collaborations and friendships within the industry.
