Jim McLean, a notable golf instructor and former professional golfer, has provided a candid update regarding his recent health crisis. In a heartfelt message shared on Instagram, McLean revealed that he experienced a serious medical emergency on May 26, which resulted in him being pronounced deceased twice due to complications from diverticulitis.

Diverticulitis is a condition characterised by the inflammation or infection of small pouches that can form in the lining of the colon. Reports indicate that when one of these pouches becomes compromised, it can lead to severe inflammation and significant health issues. In his post, McLean described the life-threatening nature of his experience and noted the symptoms commonly associated with the condition, such as abdominal pain, fever, rectal bleeding, and constipation.
The 76-year-old shared that during his time in the hospital, he chose to disconnect from his phone and social media for over three weeks, citing the need to focus on his health and recovery. This decision meant that he had been unable to respond to messages from friends and colleagues, which he explained in his Instagram letter, expressing his apologies for his absence.
Throughout his ordeal, McLean found strength and support from his family and close friends. He reflected on the unconditional care he received, stating, “From the beginning, my two boys flew down to be with me, also a few close friends. My brother Tom stayed 11 days. Other friends flew in to be at bedside. My wife Amparo has been with me 24/7. She has been my rock.” This outpouring of support was evidently crucial for McLean during a challenging time.
As he continues to recuperate, McLean is optimistic about his health journey. He mentioned plans to transfer to a physical therapy hospital soon, indicating a desire to regain his strength and return to normalcy. “I’ll be transferring to PT hospital by the end of next week. Thanks to all of you for the positive notes,” he wrote, conveying gratitude towards those who stood by him.
Members of the golfing community quickly rallied around McLean, offering messages of encouragement in the comments of his post. Fellow golf instructor Mike Bury remarked, “You’ve got at least nine lives in you. You just used two of them at once. There’s still a lot of meat left on the bone. Thinking about you and your family. You’re tough as nails, mate!” Others, like Sean Foley, expressed confidence in McLean’s ability to return to the golf course, affirming that he would make a full recovery.
Jim McLean’s journey through the world of golf is notable. After briefly competing as a professional golfer, he transitioned into coaching and established the Jim McLean Golf School, where he has trained numerous successful players, including Gary Woodland, Curtis Strange, and Cristie Kerr. His extensive experience and commitment to the sport have made him a respected figure in the golfing community.
As McLean continues on the path to recovery, his determination and resilience shine through his words. His experience serves as a reminder of the fragility of health and the importance of support in overcoming adversity. With plans to engage in physical therapy and a strong network of family and friends backing him, there is a shared sentiment of optimism for his future in both health and golf.
