A significant fire in Allentown, Pennsylvania, has displaced over 30 residents from multiple households due to the destructive blaze, which authorities believe was set by two juveniles. The incident occurred on June 24 at approximately 8:40 p.m., when a six-alarm fire erupted from a former furniture factory located on North Front Street.

Fire Chief Efrain Agosto recounted the harrowing scene when firefighters first arrived. “The flames were already through the roof and out through every single window,” he detailed during a press conference held two days later. This rapid spread of the fire posed significant threats to nearby homes, forcing some residents to evacuate through their back doors while others were instructed to shelter in place.
An extensive response from local emergency services saw over 100 firefighters from various departments working tirelessly throughout the night to combat the inferno. The intense conditions, however, led some firefighters to retreat from the old factory, as they faced the risk of structural collapses.
During the incident, as power was cut off in the vicinity by PPL Electric Utilities, more than 1,600 residents experienced outages. One firefighter suffered minor injuries but is expected to make a full recovery, according to reports by CBS Philadelphia.
Among those affected, approximately 30 adults and six children found themselves without a home after the fire wreaked havoc on their residences. The American Red Cross is currently supporting those displaced while city officials, including Allentown Mayor Matt Tuerk, have addressed the community’s urgent needs.
Local resident Damian Velez offered a personal account of the chaotic evening. “It was so crazy that they started telling people to back up, and then it started getting worse,” he recalled. Velez and his family were able to observe the blaze from their home and reported ashes falling nearby. The severity of the smoke forced them to leave their home, adding to the distress caused by the power outage, which made it difficult to contact others.
On June 26, the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office announced the arrest and charges against two juveniles linked to starting the blaze. The charges include arson, causing a catastrophe, recklessly endangering another person, and conspiracy. Due to their age and the specific circumstances surrounding the case, the identities and ages of the juveniles will not be disclosed, and the matter will progress through the juvenile justice system.
Investigations into the fire are ongoing, though authorities have not released information regarding the precise circumstances or motivations behind the incident.
In the aftermath, city officials have been encouraging community members affected by the tragedy to seek assistance from the Red Cross or to connect with the fire marshal’s office for additional support.
