Christina Ricci’s former partner, James Heerdegen, recently faced a setback in his attempt to gain emergency custody of their 11-year-old son, Freddie. The application for emergency custody was filed after Heerdegen claimed that Freddie had sent him concerning messages during a flight with his mother, actress Christina Ricci.
According to court documents acquired by PEOPLE, Heerdegen alleged that during their flight to Canada on June 16, Freddie texted him stating that Ricci had been drinking alcohol. Heerdegen’s claims prompted urgent legal action as he sought to secure temporary custody of the boy.
In her response to the allegations, Ricci confirmed that Freddie did reach out to his father, mentioning her consumption of alcohol and using specific terms that characterised her behaviour during the flight. During these conversations, Freddie clarified that he had “overreacted” when sending the texts to his father. Ricci’s legal team subsequently requested the sealing of the messages exchanged between Freddie and Heerdegen. The actress highlighted concerns over bullying that her son had faced at school, suggesting that public access to these documents could rekindle distressing experiences for Freddie, potentially jeopardising his mental health. The court agreed to seal the messages and dismissed Heerdegen’s request for emergency custody.
