A Colorado mother has been charged with second-degree murder following the tragic alcohol-related death of her 16-year-old daughter. The charge against Gretchen Leanne Ryan stems from allegations that she provided alcohol to her daughter, Grace Ryan, over an extended period, while ignoring visible signs of her declining health.

The case has been officially highlighted by the First Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which reported that the charges were filed after an investigation that commenced on 9 March 2026. Emergency responders were called to a residential property on West 85th Avenue in Arvada, where they found Grace unresponsive. Unfortunately, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation delved into the circumstances leading to the teenager’s untimely death, involving an examination of electronic devices belonging to both mother and daughter. Evidence gathered indicated that conversations about alcohol consumption had taken place frequently since September 2025. Prosecutors allege that Gretchen facilitated regular deliveries of alcohol to their home and partook in drinking with her daughter, all while attempting to hide the girl’s drinking habits from her father, who resided in a different part of the house.
Warning signs regarding Grace’s health were reportedly evident in her communications with her mother in the weeks prior to her death. Investigators cited messages referring to alarming physical symptoms, such as vomiting blood, difficulties in eating, and instances of sleeping in the bathroom. In one disturbing exchange, Grace expressed that she was in “so much pain” and implored her mother for alcohol while simultaneously revealing her severe discomfort.
Investigators also found that Grace had indicated she was “going to die” and urged her mother to call for medical help. Despite these distressing pleas, it is alleged that Ryan did not take any steps to obtain emergency assistance for her daughter. Following her arrest, Ryan allegedly made statements that suggested her overwhelming sense of guilt, reportedly telling detectives, “I killed her”, and acknowledging her perceived responsibility in Grace’s death.
On the night before the fatal incident, the final communication between mother and daughter occurred just before 10:07 p.m. The following morning, Ryan allegedly sent more messages which went unanswered until emergency services were finally alerted around 8:15 a.m.
Further compounding the tragedy, investigators discovered 173 empty alcohol bottles hidden in Grace’s bedroom, signifying a potentially serious issue with alcohol consumption. It was also revealed that the teenager had withdrawn from public school in April 2025 and switched to online education. At the time of her passing, Grace had completed only a single semester of online classes and had not engaged in any social activities outside her home for several months prior.
Prosecutors noted medical findings that suggested Grace had developed an abnormally fatty liver for someone of her age, a condition associated with prolonged alcohol consumption. An autopsy confirmed that her death resulted from aspiration pneumonia linked to chronic alcohol use—a severe condition that arises when foreign materials enter the lungs, leading to infection. The medical examiner classified the death as natural, highlighting how long-term alcohol abuse compromises bodily defenses and immune functions, increasing the risk for aspiration pneumonia.
Following this distressing incident, Gretchen Ryan has been detained in Jefferson County Jail, with her bond set at $500,000. The case highlights the deep and devastating consequences of alcohol abuse, particularly within familial relationships, and raises important questions about the responsibilities of parents in safeguarding their children’s health and wellbeing.
This case is expected to garner significant public and media attention as it unfolds, and the wider issues surrounding substance abuse and parental responsibility are likely to be scrutinised in the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident.
