Researchers have identified a new seizure disorder that has emerged from the excessive consumption of hard seltzer, a popular alcoholic drink in the UK. Named Mehandru/Vachharajani Syndrome after the scientists behind the discovery, this condition arises from dangerously low levels of sodium in the body, known as hyponatremia. The findings were published in the *International Journal of Clinical and Medical Cases* and have sparked concern among health professionals as the drink’s consumption continues to rise.

Hyponatremia occurs when sodium levels in the blood fall below the normal range, leading to symptoms such as confusion, nausea, vomiting, and in severe cases, seizures or coma. While the condition is sometimes associated with excessive water intake, the new syndrome is distinctly connected to hard seltzer. Researchers observed patients consuming, on average, two or more six-packs of hard seltzer daily, with even higher consumption over weekends.

One case study highlighted a 23-year-old woman with no previous health issues, who visited the emergency department after experiencing severe shaking followed by confusion. She admitted to regularly consuming six 12-ounce cans of hard seltzer each night and doubling her intake during weekends. In addition, a 24-year-old man suffering from hypertension and diabetes, along with a 59-year-old man with a history of alcohol abuse, both reported daily consumption of hard seltzer and developed the same seizure disorder.
The researchers noted the rising popularity of hard seltzer, especially among younger generations who often view beer consumption as unfashionable. While instances of hyponatremia related to beer are recognised within the medical community, the Mehandru/Vachharajani Syndrome stands out as the first documented instance of this condition linked to hard seltzer consumption.
Factors contributing to the rise of hard seltzer include its range of fruity flavours and appeal as a low-calorie beverage. The alcoholic content typically sits around 5%, accompanied by minimal sodium and other essential minerals. The combination of these factors encourages excessive drinking, particularly amongst young adults who are drawn to the notion of a healthier alcoholic option.
As hard seltzer continues to gain traction in the market, experts predict that case numbers associated with hyponatremia will likely increase. With warmer weather encouraging outdoor socialising and heightened intake of such beverages, the risk remains pronounced. The National Library of Medicine notes that summer fluctuations in sodium levels can often be exacerbated due to sweat loss and the consumption of drinks with low solute content.
In light of these findings, healthcare professionals are urging the public to remain vigilant about their drinking habits, especially during the summer months. As the popularity of hard seltzer shows no signs of waning, the burden of health consequences related to its excessive consumption may further escalate.
