Zac Efron, the star renowned for his role in the iconic “High School Musical” franchise, is embarking on an ambitious project to build his first home in Australia. Known for his focus on sustainability, Efron has partnered with notable Dutch-Australian designer Joost Bakker for his eco-friendly residence, aptly named “FutureCave.” The home will be constructed using hemp as its primary building material, showcasing Efron’s commitment to environmentally conscious living.

The development is taking place approximately an hour’s drive from Byron Bay in New South Wales. Efron acquired a substantial 128-hectare plot of land in 2020, where his vision for a sustainable home is now becoming a reality. According to reports, the house will incorporate internal bricks and joinery predominantly made from hemp sourced from a local farm in southern New South Wales. In a nod to sustainability, even elements like Efron’s mattress and soft furnishings, such as curtains and pillows, will reportedly be made from hemp.

Bakker has been actively sharing insights into the construction process on Instagram, sparking excitement for the project. In a post dated 8 May, he expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Excited to get started on Zac’s house!” This was accompanied by a photograph of him alongside Efron and the project’s collaborators, marking the beginning of their work together.
Most recently, Bakker updated his followers on a collaborative project with Plantbord, a company that produces sustainable particle boards. These boards, designed to enhance soil health, will be integral to the construction of the kitchen and bathroom joinery in Efron’s home. The upcoming build will utilise 200 of these eco-friendly boards, evidencing the thoughtful approach to sustainable materials throughout the project.
Set within a stunning natural backdrop that features virgin rainforest, ancient cedar trees, and tranquil waterfalls, Efron’s home will comprise six unique “bedroom pods.” Connected by an outdoor walkway, each pod will be equipped with its own bathroom and rooftop garden. A spacious living area will serve as the central hub of the property, further integrating the home with its serene environment.
In an interview, Efron shared the motivations behind his choice for such an unconventional residence. He described his desire to create a haven where he can recharge amidst nature, especially given the hectic nature of his work life. “I live a pretty fast-paced life and work quite a bit… my number one goal is always to take time for myself and rest and recharge, and this land just feels like it’s perfect for that,” he explained, highlighting the importance of connecting with nature.
Bakker, who first connected with Efron during the filming of his Netflix travel series “Down to Earth” in 2021, reflected on the remarkable opportunity to design the actor’s home. Efron’s vision and enthusiasm invigorated Bakker, pushing creative boundaries. He described the moment Efron invited him to lead the project as a “dream come true,” stating that the collaboration has been an exciting exploration of innovative ideas in sustainable living.
In late 2021, reports indicated that Efron was considering putting down roots in Australia, having listed his Los Angeles property for sale. An insider mentioned that he had no immediate plans to return to Los Angeles permanently, having developed a strong affinity for Australia, which he now considers home. While he was at one point romantically linked to Australian model Vanessa Valladares, the couple parted ways after ten months, further solidifying Efron’s connection to the region.
As Efron’s “FutureCave” progresses, it not only represents his personal sanctuary but also stands as a testament to sustainable building practices in an era increasingly focused on environmental responsibility.
