According to Public Information Officer Mike Wood from the Pensacola Police Department, the father was in the house with his third child when he realised the sisters were missing. After a brief search of the home, he contacted law enforcement for assistance. Officers responded promptly to the family’s residence on Gerhardt Drive around 6:30 PM.

The search by the police revealed no signs of the children nearby, and approximately 40 minutes after the initial call, an officer discovered them in a neighbour’s pool. One child was found submerged at the bottom of the pool, while the other was floating. Officer Wood recounted the officer’s heroic actions, stating that he utilized a chair to assist him over the fence before jumping into the water to retrieve the girls.
Once the children were out of the pool, the officer immediately began administering CPR. Emergency medical personnel continued the lifesaving efforts while transporting the sisters to Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola hospital. Unfortunately, they were later pronounced dead despite the frantic attempts to revive them.
Investigators have been working diligently to reconstruct the events leading up to the tragedy. The swimming pool was secured with a two-layered fence system, both of which were locked at the time of the incident. Preliminary investigations suggest that the older sister may have been responsible for unlocking a gate, enabling her younger sibling to follow her. Wood noted that the eight-year-old is quite athletic and adventurous, with prior instances of climbing, prompting speculation about how they accessed the pool area.
It is believed that the girls may have entered the pool from the shallow end and encountered difficulties as the water deepened unexpectedly. Wood explained that the pool’s slippery surface and steep incline could have contributed to the distressing situation. Investigators have yet to determine the precise series of events leading to the sisters’ critical state, and Wood stressed that some aspects of the theory remain speculative.
At this time, there are no indications of negligence on the part of the girls’ parents. According to Wood, the father was engaged in preparing dinner when the tragedy struck and had not expected the girls to be outside. Furthermore, authorities estimated that the children could have been in the water for as long as 55 minutes before they were discovered.
The family residing next door was familiar with the girls, although they did not frequent each other’s homes regularly. Wood confirmed that while the families knew each other, their interactions were limited.
In the aftermath of this devastating event, Pensacola Mayor D.C. Reeves expressed his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family. He acknowledged the profound loss while also thanking the first responders for their swift and dedicated efforts in a heartbreaking situation. In a statement, Reeves conveyed, “Our hearts are completely broken over the devastating tragedy… There are no words for a heartbreak of this magnitude, and our deepest prayers and thoughts are with their family during this unimaginably difficult time.”
The mayor’s comments reflect the emotional impact of the incident on the community, as residents grapple with the loss of two young lives. He urged everyone to keep the affected family in their thoughts, as they navigate this unimaginable tragedy.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of ensuring children’s safety, particularly around bodies of water. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic deaths of the sisters, seeking to provide clarity and closure for the family and the community at large.
