Former First Lady Jill Biden has recounted a rather uncomfortable car journey with Melania Trump on Inauguration Day 2025 in her recently released memoir, “A View from the East Wing.” The memoir, published earlier this week, sheds light on the limited interactions the two women had shared over the years and highlights the awkward dynamics present during their first significant encounter.

According to Jill, the ride from the White House to the Capitol for the swearing-in ceremony marked a notable moment, as it was the first time they had interacted closely, apart from fleeting meetings at funerals for notable figures like former First Ladies Rosalyn Carter and President Jimmy Carter. Explaining the context, Jill noted, “The presidents’ car was likely frosty too, but at least they’d spent considerable time in each other’s company.”

In the vehicle, tension seemed palpable as both first ladies sat with John Bessler, husband of US Senator Amy Klobuchar. Jill jokingly indicated that Bessler “must have drawn the shortest of all possible straws” for his role in easing the atmosphere during this unusual ride. Bessler attempted to initiate conversation by asking Melania about their son Barron, who at the time was transitioning to college. Melania’s responses, however, were brief and to the point, revealing Barron’s attendance at New York University and that he had a floor to himself in Trump Tower, accompanied by Secret Service while attending classes.
Despite the apparent hope for casual chit-chat, Jill noted that Melania repeatedly redirected the conversation towards the weather. In a moment of attempting to relate, Jill expressed sympathy for the military dogs they passed since it was an exceptionally cold day in Washington, where temperatures hovered below freezing. Subsequently, Jill found herself trying to engage with Melania’s “weather-only program,” which suggests a level of discomfort about broaching more personal topics.
Melania’s reluctance to discuss subjects outside of the weather became evident when the conversation shifted towards their family pets. When asked if the Trumps owned a dog, Melania replied that they did not, citing Barron’s firm stance against getting one despite her inquiries.
Occasionally, Melania did open up; Jill noted a brief exchange on her father’s well-being following the death of Melania’s mother. “She said he was doing okay, and he was there with them, then said, ‘But you know, it’s only been a year,’” Jill recalled. This moment hinted at a more personal touch in their otherwise strained interaction.
Throughout the ride, Jill reflected on the underlying tensions that may have coloured Melania’s mood. She speculated that some animosity might stem from the FBI’s search of Mar-a-Lago in 2022, pursuant to an investigation into Donald Trump’s handling of classified documents. Jill expressed empathy, sharing that she understood the distress of such an invasive experience, having faced similar situations during an FBI search of her own home.
Despite their shared experience as first ladies, the transition from Joe Biden’s presidency to Donald Trump’s second term was marked by a lack of traditional camaraderie. Notably, Melania did not invite Jill to discuss the transition following the Bidens’ victory in 2020. Instead, the Trumps opted to skip the incoming administration’s inauguration, a significant break from precedent, and left Washington for their Mar-a-Lago estate on the morning of Joe Biden’s inauguration.
In an effort to support a smooth transition, Jill reached out to Melania after Donald Trump’s win in 2024, inviting her to the White House. While Donald accepted the invitation, Melania declined, which further illustrated the divisions between their respective families. Jill reportedly sent Donald with a handwritten note for Melania, expressing her willingness to assist in the transition despite their complicated history.
As Jill Biden’s memoir continues to unravel past interactions and perceived animosities, it encapsulates the unique challenges faced by first ladies navigating personal dynamics amid political strife. The 2025 car ride may have been just one incident, yet it reflects broader themes of transition, relationship-building, and the weight of expectation that accompanies such prominent roles in public life.
