Kai Cameron and James Desantis have taken a significant step towards their future together as they have announced their engagement after seven years of dating. The proposal took place during a breathtaking safari in Africa, where Cameron, a 32-year-old influencer with a substantial following of 1.3 million on social media platforms, decided it was the perfect moment to ask for his partner’s hand in marriage.

The couple first crossed paths at The Eagle, a popular queer venue in New York City, in what Desantis describes as a classic encounter. “Kai walked up and asked if I knew where the bears were,” he recalls. With a playful response, Desantis quickly quipped, “I’m right here,” setting the tone for their flirtatious beginnings.
Their relationship blossomed rapidly, with the two embarking on a second date in Miami while Desantis was engaged with Art Basel Miami Beach. Although it felt risky at the time, the decision proved fruitful and just a month later, the pair exchanged those all-important three words, “I love you”, in Palm Springs.
Two years later, the duo took another major step forward by moving in together and eventually purchasing a home. Cameron reflects on this gradual but significant progression, stating, “I don’t think either of us had one giant movie moment where we suddenly knew. We just kept building a life together, and every next step felt like the obvious and natural one.”
As for the proposal, Cameron, who acknowledges that Desantis tends to be the planner of the two, wanted to ensure it was a memorable surprise. Knowing that a safari held a special place in Desantis’s heart, he seized the opportunity to propose during their trip. “It’s probably the straightest thing I’ve ever done,” he laughed, alluding to the meticulous planning behind the proposal.
Cameron did experience some nerves leading up to the moment. With multiple flights and shared luggage on their journey, he worried about misplacing the engagement ring. However, once the moment came to propose, he felt surprisingly calm, ironically more stressed about the idea of encountering wildlife on safari.
The proposal was beautifully orchestrated with help from their accommodation, the Ritz-Carlton Masai Mara Safari Camp. A sunset bonfire was set up in the savanna, and their safari guide cleverly referenced their initial meeting by asking if there were any bears around. At that moment, in a playful twist, Cameron pointed out into the distance, allowing him to drop down on one knee to present the ring.
Desantis recalls, “When I turned around, Kai was down on one knee.” Following the proposal, the couple savoured their engagement, celebrating under the stars with music and drinks at the hotel.
As they returned from this unforgettable evening, Cameron expressed how overwhelmed they both felt: “We spent the rest of the evening trying to process the fact that we were engaged. James was completely shell-shocked, but the Negroni helped.” Desantis added, “It’s a night we’ll remember forever.”
Currently, the couple is focusing on enjoying their engagement rather than planning a wedding. Cameron noted, “Gay engagements have been known to last anywhere from six months to the remainder of your life, so we’re giving ourselves a little grace and enjoying this chapter first.” Desantis joked that the next step is to find a ring for Kai, which he anticipates could take some time.
