Rider Strong, who portrayed the character Shawn Hunter, spoke to PEOPLE about capturing behind-the-scenes moments during the production of the show. He utilised his family’s VHS camera to document the camaraderie and spontaneous interactions of the cast. “I grew up with my parents, who were early adopters of VHS cameras,” Strong explained. This early exposure led him to film various facets of his life on set, turning his camera on castmates and capturing candid memories.
Despite the fact that Strong did not consistently carry a camera, he unexpectedly uncovered a treasure trove of footage from his time working on “Boy Meets World.” He recalled finding two complete tapes that contained informal moments from behind the scenes. “It was mostly just me pointing the camera at someone’s face and asking them to say hello,” he remarked with a chuckle, reflecting on the playful nature of his filming.
Interestingly, some of this footage includes a unique behind-the-scenes perspective of an episode where his co-star Ben Savage’s character, Cory Matthews, is tasked with creating a documentary. Strong explained how he came to possess a recording from Savage’s point of view during rehearsals for that very scene. “We were just sitting there holding our scripts, dressed in our regular clothes, with Ben hitting the record button,” Strong revealed, making his co-stars laugh at the whimsical reminder of their time together.
In addition to their podcast, the three actors embarked on a sold-out national tour that provided fans with the opportunity to engage with their favourite childhood stars. This tour is also chronicled in “Doc Meets World,” which follows the trio as they revisit their shared history and the lasting impact of the show on their lives.
Strong, Fishel, and Friedle all expressed how their relationship has flourished over the years, despite the time apart since their days on “Boy Meets World.” Fishel noted, “I don’t think any of us had such an honest relationship with each other.” The common experiences and understanding they share have brought them closer together, even through any awkwardness that might occasionally arise.
“For me, being involved in this project has been one of the biggest gifts in recent years,” Fishel remarked, highlighting the importance of their friendship as a source of support and joy. Friedle echoed this sentiment, emphasising that their connection surpasses any memories associated with the show itself. “The shared memories we have from out of the show represent just a fraction of what we’ve experienced together,” he added.
Their ongoing conversations and the podcast have allowed the trio to maintain a rich dialogue, one that they find both energising and essential. “Even when we go a couple of weeks without recording, once we reconnect, it feels like we have a wealth of things to catch up on,” Strong shared, underscoring the natural chemistry that continues to thrive among them.
