A woman from Rostraver, Pennsylvania, has been charged with public nuisance after authorities discovered approximately 50 pigs on her property, following complaints from neighbours about a rat infestation. Wendi Kraemer, 59, was arrested on 2 June, with legal documents highlighting the alarming situation on her land.

The investigation began weeks prior, on 18 May, when local residents raised concerns regarding a significant rat problem in the vicinity. Initial reports indicated that the rodent issue was linked to unsanitary conditions at Kraemer’s home, prompting local officials to take action. Rostraver Township Manager Jeffrey Keffer described the scene, stating that officers had to chase and corral multiple pigs, requiring them to make several trips using trailers to remove the animals.
Reports suggest that the local authorities may have condemned Kraemer’s property due to the appalling living conditions. Those familiar with the case reported that the pigs were crammed into a confined area, alongside dogs and cats, all in what Rostraver Police Chief Scott Sokol termed as “horrifying” conditions. He elaborated on the discovery, claiming that the level of filth found was beyond what one could imagine, adding that they encountered a substantial number of pigs during their investigation.

Investigators noted the presence of rats, which were believed to have proliferated due to the alleged “trash conditions” found at Kraemer’s residence on Route 51. The police suggested that the unhygienic situation on her property had contributed to the establishment of a rat colony that spread to neighbouring homes on Adams Drive.
Kraemer allegedly portrayed her property as an “animal rescue,” even creating a website to fundraise for the animals in her care. However, the circumstances surrounding the property have raised serious questions about the legitimacy of those claims. As the investigation unfolded, it became clear that the situation was far from a standard rescue operation.
Local media outlets reported the situation as one of considerable distress for the community. One neighbour described the situation as unbelievable, reflecting widespread shock at the sheer number of pigs and the conditions in which they were found. The distress caused to local residents due to the rat infestation has also underscored the broader implications of the alleged neglect on Kraemer’s part.
As authorities prepare to present their findings, Kraemer is scheduled to appear for a preliminary court hearing on 13 July. The case has captured attention not only due to the animals involved but also due to its potential impact on community health and safety.
The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s Office has been approached for comments on the case, and it remains to be seen what legal repercussions Kraemer may face should the allegations be substantiated in court. As the story continues to develop, it raises important questions about animal welfare and public health standards in residential areas.
