The victims have been identified as 38-year-old Sergio Leon, his wife Herminia Hernandez, 39, and their four-year-old twins, Naomi and Nyah Leon. Sergio’s brother, 36-year-old Antonio Leon, also perished in the crash. The family was travelling in their vehicle when it was struck at high speed by another car, which subsequently led to a devastating fire engulfing their vehicle.

The collision occurred shortly after 8:00 am on State Route 62 in San Bernardino County, approximately 40 miles from the Arizona border. According to reports from ABC7, Sergio’s family was expecting them to arrive for the graduation festivities when they received troubling news about the tragic accident. “We had family members starting to arrive… that family — Sergio, Antonio, Nyah, Naomi — never showed up,” stated Itzia Zamarripa, a cousin of the victims.
Zamarripa recounted receiving a call about the crash shortly after it occurred. “This car happened to go into the back of the truck as they entered the lane and ended up perpendicular to my cousin,” she explained to KMPH Fox26 News. She elaborated that the twins, who were expected to graduate from preschool on June 3, were caught off guard and had “no time to react” before the impact caused their vehicle to burst into flames.
The other driver involved in the crash, 60-year-old Holly Chafey, also lost her life at the scene. All six individuals involved were pronounced dead shortly after the accident, as confirmed by the San Bernardino County coroner’s office.
In light of this tragedy, family members have come together to memorialise the lives lost and support one another during this devastating period. Cesar Sanchez, a relative, established a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral and memorial expenses, which has already raised nearly £30,000 within days. Sanchez described the Leon family as one filled with “love, laughter, devotion, and unwavering support for one another,” paying tribute to the significant impact they had on those around them.
He characterised Sergio as possessing a “hardworking spirit and generous heart,” while Herminia was remembered for her “beautiful soul” that touched countless lives. The twins, Naomi and Nyah, were described as sources of “endless joy, innocence, laughter and light.” Sanchez also shared that both Sergio and Antonio were avid fans of the Las Vegas Raiders and often enjoyed a friendly football rivalry with Herminia, who supported the San Francisco 49ers.
The community has rallied around the Leon family in the wake of this tragedy, with memorial services being arranged to honour their memory. The impact of their loss is being felt deeply among family, friends, and all who knew them.
The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash, but further details have yet to be disclosed. Family members are awaiting closure while they navigate this immense grief, struggling to comprehend the sudden loss of their loved ones.
As the Leon family is remembered, the tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of cherishing each moment. The lives of Sergio, Herminia, Antonio, and the twins will continue to resonate within the hearts of those they touched, as their legacy is celebrated in the memories shared by friends and family during this profoundly sorrowful time.
