The rodeo community in Arizona is in mourning following the tragic death of professional bull rider Morgan Julian, who lost his life in a motorcycle accident on 30 May 2023. The 31-year-old was killed in a crash that occurred at an intersection in Mesa, which has been the site of multiple serious collisions in the past week.

Julian’s accident took place near the junction of Signal Butte Road and State Route 24, as confirmed by the Mesa Police Department. First responders arrived promptly at the scene but sadly pronounced him dead shortly thereafter. Local reports indicate this incident was the third major accident at the same intersection within just a week, raising concerns among residents regarding traffic safety.

Friends and family have been paying heartfelt tributes to Julian, recalling not only his prowess in bull riding but also his dedication to mentoring younger competitors and his warm, supportive nature. Tonka Baj, a close friend, described him as “a genuine bloke” with a true cowboy spirit, who loved helping others reach their goals in rodeo. “Morgan rode bulls exceptionally well, but more importantly, he was passionate about uplifting those around him,” Baj remarked.

He was a familiar face at rodeo events across Arizona, particularly at the Roadrunner Restaurant & Saloon, where he frequently competed. Those who knew him have fond memories of his commitment to family life, emphasising his role as a devoted father to his three children. Friend Kelly Jo Hinshaw highlighted, “He was an amazing dad,” noting how Julian integrated his children into the rodeo lifestyle while maintaining a balance between parenting and his passion for riding.
Approximately a year prior to his untimely death, Julian opted to step back from active competition to focus more on his family. Despite his absence from the arena as a competitor, he stayed involved in the sport through judging rodeo events, which allowed him to remain connected to the community he loved. “Being on the sidelines still gives you butterflies, but it’s safer than being strapped to a bull,” Baj added.
In the wake of Julian’s passing, the rodeo community has come together to support his family through this difficult time. A post on the Cave Creekers Infamous Bulletin Board Facebook page expressed the community’s grief: “Our Rodeo community is heartbroken by the loss of Morgan Julian. His passing has left an unimaginable void.” Plans are underway for a benefit bull-riding event and fundraiser scheduled for 20 June at the Roadrunner Restaurant & Saloon, with proceeds from various activities earmarked to support Julian’s family.
Julian’s family has announced that a memorial service will take place on 13 June at Mountain View United Methodist Church in Cottonwood, Arizona, as they prepare to honour his remarkable life and contributions to the rodeo scene.
With Julian’s accident initiating a focus on road safety, concerns have been voiced about the perilous intersection where he died. Local news outlets report that two other significant crashes occurred at the same location within the same week; a 51-year-old man lost his life in a collision there on 24 May, and another serious incident on 26 May resulted in hospitalisation for one individual. Both earlier accidents were allegedly caused by drivers running red lights, leading to increased worries among residents. “It feels dangerous to travel through that intersection,” voiced local resident Patty Lesperance, echoing sentiments shared by many in the community.
In response to these incidents, Mesa police have stated that an investigation into the cause of Julian’s crash is ongoing, and plans for additional patrols in the area are being discussed by city officials to address safety concerns. Efforts to enhance road safety at the intersection may be forthcoming, as the community grapples with the recent tragedies it has experienced.
As news of Julian’s death continues to reverberate through the rodeo community and beyond, his legacy as a mentor and loving father, along with his passion for bull riding, will be cherished and remembered by all who knew him. The support from fellow riders and friends serves as an affirmation of the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him.
