In an amusing turn of events, the Bethel Park Police Department in Pennsylvania has made headlines after officers rescued a wayward chicken that was causing traffic disruption. According to information shared by the department on their social media platforms, local officers received a report about the “fowl play” and quickly arrived at the scene. Upon their arrival, they encountered the chicken, which had seemingly taken up residence in the middle of the road. It was reported that the bird appeared uncertain about whether to cross the street, which prompted what the police described as a “hilarious series of events” followed by a brief chase.

Officers managed to capture the Plymouth Rock variety chicken without incident and transported her back to the police station for safekeeping. Once there, the furry fugitive was subjected to a “brief interrogation,” as the police jokingly phrased it in their Instagram post. The department humorously noted that during this questioning, Lt. McQuail adamantly denied blocking traffic, instead claiming to have been directing it.

Officer Stephen Hozella, who responded to the call about the wayward bird, posed for photos with the chicken at the department’s dispatch centre. One particularly noteworthy image featured the chicken in an AI-generated police uniform, a light-hearted addition that has charmed many on social media. As a result of her newfound status, the chicken was named Lt. McQuail, a fitting moniker for her role as an honorary officer.
Despite the department’s hopes of finding Lt. McQuail’s owner, no one has come forward to claim her as of 2 June. Given the circumstances, police Chief Dave Arnold confirmed that the gentle bird has now been placed in a foster home, described as a “foster flock,” where she is reportedly doing well.
Moreover, the Bethel Park Police have expressed their desire to reunite the chicken with her rightful owner. They have urged anyone who may be missing a Plymouth Rock chicken to reach out to their dispatch centre at 412-833-2000. However, the department also issued a request for restraint, kindly asking the public not to inundate their lines with calls regarding adoption or rehoming of Lt. McQuail.
This light-hearted rescue has brought smiles to the faces of local residents and social media users alike, showcasing the charming side of community policing. The department’s playful engagement with the situation, alongside their commitment to the welfare of the animal, demonstrates a positive and engaging relationship with the public.
Animal rescue stories, whether they involve cats, dogs, or even chickens, often resonate with the public, reflecting compassion and community spirit. As of now, the Bethel Park Police Department continues their efforts to ensure Lt. McQuail finds her way back to her original home, serving as a reminder of the simple joys and unexpected moments that life can bring.
