In a candid interview featured on the cover of GQ, actor Tom Holland has shared his experiences with alcohol and the significant changes he has made in his life since becoming sober. The 30-year-old star, who rose to fame with his role as Spider-Man, discussed the loneliness that accompanied his past drinking habits, revealing insights about his journey to recovery.

Reflecting on his drinking days, Holland acknowledged that his experiences were “un-Hollywood.” While his peers might have engaged in more raucous activities, he described a different reality: “I would sit at home in my hotel room and finish a minibar and go to work the next day.” His interpretation of a wild lifestyle, he explained, was often marked by solitude rather than social adventures.
During the interview, Holland was responding to remarks made by his friend and co-star Robert Pattinson, who suggested that Holland had prolonged his “crazy years.” Pattinson noted, “I feel like he kind of lived out his sort of crazy years in the amount of time which you’re supposed to, which is maybe, like, eight years, and I really stretched mine out.” Holland agreed but emphasised that what might appear as wildness to some was, for him, a “lonely” experience.
Holland reflected on his past, recalling a previous interview from 2019 when he was in the midst of his career developments, including his relationship with fellow actor Zendaya. “I was obviously drinking back then,” he noted, recognising that despite being at a high point in his career, enjoying success and love, his alcohol consumption was taking a toll. “I was building a career that I was really excited about,” he said, hinting at how his lifestyle choices were quietly complicating that excitement.
In January 2022, Holland took the significant step of quitting alcohol altogether. What began as a commitment to participate in “Dry January” soon transformed into a fundamental lifestyle change. He realised that alcohol had become too integral to his day-to-day existence, prompting him to make a decisive exit from drinking. Since these changes, he has launched a line of non-alcoholic beers called Bero, which has recently introduced a new shandy line inspired by Zendaya.
After taking a break from the entertainment industry, Holland is set to return to the big screen. He stars alongside Matt Damon and Robert Pattinson in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film, *The Odyssey*, as well as reprising his role in *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*. Holland explained the importance of this time away, saying, “I needed a break… I felt like I’d overworked, and I needed to do some growing up in my personal life.”
Holland’s decision to step back from acting was crucial in ensuring he remained passionate about his work. He elaborated on this notion, stating, “I just wanted to make sure that I was always in love with what I was doing.” The actor noted that when a career begins to feel like a chore, it’s essential to reassess one’s direction.
In addition to discussing his sobriety, Holland has also opened up about some of the consequences of his drinking habits in past years. He admitted that while he didn’t have negative experiences directly linked to alcohol, there were moments that impacted him the following day. A pivotal moment of clarity came when Holland realised he had relied on drinking to enjoy social events, prompting him to reconsider his choices. “It’s really helpful when the people closest to you start going, ‘Are you sure?’,” he reflected.
As Holland continues on his path of sobriety, he stands as a testament to the transformative power of self-reflection and responsibility. His journey highlights not only personal growth but also the broader conversations surrounding mental health and substance use within the entertainment industry.
As public interest in Hollywood figures expands, so does the importance of addressing issues like addiction and recovery. Tom Holland’s story serves to inspire not just his fans, but all those who may find themselves navigating similar challenges.
