A California man has been sentenced to an indeterminate prison term of 25 years to life for the murder of his eight-month-old daughter, Raina. Jesse Manuel Figueroa was convicted earlier this year following a harrowing case that drew attention to the issue of child abuse.

Raina tragically passed away in 2020 after sustaining fatal injuries while under Figueroa’s care. Prosecutors from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office reported that she was struck so violently that it resulted in her brain being dislodged and shifted to another part of her skull.
On the day of the incident, Figueroa initially claimed nothing was amiss with his daughter as he prepared to take her to a family barbecue. However, he later reported that she had lost consciousness and blood had begun seeping from her nose while they were en route. This account raised suspicions after medical staff discovered a bruise on Raina’s left cheek matching the size and shape of an adult hand.

Following an autopsy, the medical examiner confirmed that Raina had suffered significant brain trauma due to being struck in the face. The medical report further detailed the extent of her injuries, indicating that they were both severe and indicative of physical abuse.
Additional evidence presented during the trial suggested that Figueroa had a history of abusive behaviour, not only towards Raina but also towards his other two children, aged two and three at the time. Prosecutors revealed that these younger children were subjected to physical punishment, reportedly being forced to kneel on rice as a form of discipline.
Importantly, Figueroa had been under a restraining order at the time of Raina’s death, which prohibited him from having unsupervised contact with his child. This adds a layer of complexity to the case, drawing attention to systemic failures regarding child welfare and protection.
On 29 May 2026, Figueroa was formally sentenced for his crimes. In response to the verdict, District Attorney Jeff Rosen expressed the community’s deep sorrow over the loss of Raina, stating, “Raina would have been six years old today instead of just a name on a murder case. These cases break our hearts at the brutality, at the senselessness, at the sheer loss of an innocent child.”
The verdict has reignited discussions around child safeguarding and the necessity for vigilant protection of vulnerable children from abusive environments. Cases like Raina’s highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and preventative measures against child abuse.
In light of the tragic circumstances, authorities have urged individuals to report any suspicions of child abuse. The Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline offers support to those in need, available around the clock and providing assistance in over 170 languages.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of children and the ongoing battle to ensure their safety. Figueroa’s lengthy prison sentence reflects a measure of justice, although it pales in comparison to the profound loss suffered by Raina’s family and community.
