An 18-year-old from Wildwood, Mississippi, has recounted a harrowing experience that unfolded on 26th April, which turned a trip home to collect a prom dress into a life-saving mission for her beloved dog, Haavi. Willow Weiss received notification that her highly anticipated prom dress had arrived and couldn’t wait to try it on. Little did she know that her decisions that day would have critical consequences for her pet’s life.

After leaving her friend’s house in excitement, Weiss arrived home to find her two Great Danes and a black Russian terrier welcoming her. However, there was no sign of Haavi, her eight-year-old Bouvier des Flandres. Thinking he was resting somewhere, Weiss dashed inside to drop off her belongings and collect her dress. When she checked again for Haavi and still didn’t see him, an unsettling instinct drew her to look outside.
Through her parents’ bedroom window, Weiss spotted Haavi lying on the deck, covered in blood and seemingly unconscious. Panic ensued as she raced outside, calling for her mother while struggling with tears. “My adrenaline immediately spiked. I rushed outside to see if he was even alive,” she recalled. With no time to lose, Weiss knew she needed help and began to formulate a plan to get Haavi to a veterinarian as swiftly as possible.

As she waited for her mother’s arrival, Weiss began to piece together what had happened to her dog. Evidence of a violent struggle was apparent, with blood leading towards the house and deep scratches on Haavi’s flank. It became evident that he had been attacked by another animal, although the specific predator was never identified. The sight of her injured dog was overwhelming, and Weiss’ relentless urgency demonstrated the depth of her concern for Haavi’s welfare.
When her mother finally reached home, Weiss and a neighbour worked together to transport their 150-pound pet to the emergency veterinary clinic. Veterinary staff were prepared for the emergency and swiftly took Haavi in for a lengthy six-hour surgery to treat his extensive injuries. The medical team relayed troubling news that numerous deep wounds were located on Haavi’s body, necessitating further intervention.

Following initial treatment, Haavi was moved to the Mizzou Veterinary Health Center in Columbia for specialised care. Here, vets confirmed the presence of several animal bites on him, marking clear evidence of the attack he had endured. It became apparent that, were it not for Weiss’ impulse to return home for her dress, Haavi may not have survived the ordeal, as the blood loss was severe. “If my prom dress hadn’t been delivered that afternoon, I would have stayed at my friend’s house. My parents weren’t due home until much later, and the vet said he likely wouldn’t have made it,” Weiss reflected gratefully.
The emotional toll on the Weiss family has been profound, but there was a flicker of joy as the prom approached. While Weiss attended the event wearing the dress she had rushed home to retrieve, her thoughts remained with Haavi. “The prom went well, but my heart was completely at home,” she commented, illustrating the deep bond she shares with her pet.
As of now, Haavi is back home with his family. Although he has endured significant trauma, his health is steadily improving day by day. “Our whole family is just so incredibly grateful to have our baby back home and alive,” Weiss expressed, acknowledging the complex series of events that ultimately led to Haavi’s rescue.
In light of the staggering medical expenses, which total over £20,000, the Weiss family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to assist in covering Haavi’s treatment costs. The fundraiser has already gathered considerable support, surpassing the halfway mark to its target, with plans to donate any excess funds to a local animal protection agency.
The ordeal has served not only as a testament to the bond between a girl and her dog but also highlights the unpredictable nature of pet ownership. As they share their story, the Weiss family hopes to raise awareness around the importance of being vigilant and proactive in safeguarding pets from potential dangers.
