Authorities in Ohio have successfully identified a young girl whose remains were discovered nearly 50 years ago. Previously known only as “Baby Angel,” the child has been confirmed to be Velina Jeter, a name that had been lost to time until now. This significant revelation was announced by Hamilton County Coroner Dr. Lakshmi Kode Sammarco during a press briefing held on May 29.

The investigation into Velina’s tragic fate began on February 4, 1979, when her charred remains were unearthed in a field on Eiler Lane in Springfield Township, roughly 100 miles from her birthplace in Columbus. Sammarco explained that the condition of the body made identification nearly impossible at the time, as it was not only unrecognisable but also showed signs of severe post-mortem charring.

Initial forensic assessments indicated the remains belonged to an African American girl roughly one year old, yet no further details were available for years. As the investigation progressed, authorities determined that Velina’s death resulted from a trauma to the head, leading to a homicide ruling. Tragically, blood was found inside her skull, underscoring the violent circumstances surrounding her death.

In a bid to revive the investigation, Velina’s remains were exhumed in 2008 for DNA analysis. This critical step ultimately contributed to her identification and enabled authorities to reconnect her with a name and a history after decades of anonymity. During the briefing, the coroner’s office also highlighted Velina’s parents, both of whom have since passed away: her mother, Sharon Jeter, who died in December 2013, and her father, Barry Lee Valentine, who died in February 2011.
The investigation has involved various local law enforcement agencies, including officers from the Cincinnati Police Department, who praised community efforts that have been instrumental in helping to identify Velina and restoring her identity. The police continue to solicit information from the public regarding the case, pledging to keep the investigation active until justice is served.
As authorities delve deeper into the circumstances of Velina’s death, they have yet to identify any suspects. The Springfield Township Police, Cincinnati Police, and FBI’s Southern Ohio Cold Case Task Force are collaborating on the ongoing investigation, calling upon the community to assist by sharing any relevant information or DNA samples that could help in solving the case.
The story of Velina Jeter serves as a stark reminder of the unresolved tragedies that can linger in communities. It highlights the importance of collective efforts in law enforcement, forensic science, and community engagement to ensure that the memories of those who have suffered are not forgotten.
Community members are encouraged to come forward with any information that could provide further insights into Velina’s life and untimely death. The case remains open, and authorities are committed to seeking justice for this young girl who has finally regained her identity after so many years.
