Brendan Gleeson brings his unique charisma to the role of Silvermane, a sharp-witted crime boss, in the recently released series “Spider-Noir,” available to stream on Prime Video. In an interview with PEOPLE, Gleeson recounted the chemistry he shared with Cage, describing their interactions as reminiscent of a lively “tennis match.” He noted that their characters, although positioned as adversaries, share a complicated rapport, enhanced by the improvisational spirit the two actors brought to the filming. “The joust was always fun,” Gleeson expressed, revealing how the off-screen camaraderie translated into dynamic on-screen performances.

At 71 years of age, Gleeson continues to impress with his versatility as an actor. He labelled Cage as “very generous and inventive,” acknowledging the trust that developed between them during production. This trust allowed Gleeson to feel confident in engaging with Cage in a manner that felt both spontaneous and collaborative. He emphasised that their playful exchanges were pivotal in shaping the narrative and tone of their scenes.
The rapport between Gleeson and Cage is central to the storyline of “Spider-Noir.” Gleeson’s character, Silvermane, finds himself in a love/hate relationship with Cage’s Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider—a character navigating the turbulent waters of his past and his atypical spider-like abilities. Gleeson noted that their characters, while embroiled in conflict, also found joy in their verbal sparring. “Even though they were kind of sworn enemies, there was a mutual kind of enjoyment about getting into it with each other,” he remarked, likening their relationship to that of two boxers who share a mutual respect despite their rivalry.
The thematic elements of “Spider-Noir,” based on the acclaimed Spider-Man Noir comic series, also carry significant weight. Gleeson’s portrayal of a commanding and menacing figure adds a layer of complexity to his character’s interactions. He quipped about his approach to embodying Silvermane, suggesting that playing a villain requires an understanding of the character’s ruthlessness. “The secret to it, is that you believe they will not care to that extent,” he joked, implying that the chilling nature of villainy comes from a lack of regard for others.
Visually, “Spider-Noir” offers viewers a choice between “Authentic Black & White” and “True-Hue Full Color,” allowing audiences to experience the narrative in different artistic styles. This dynamic approach not only serves to enhance the viewing experience but also showcases Gleeson’s ability to adapt his performance to suit the style of the series.
In addition to Gleeson and Cage, “Spider-Noir” features an impressive ensemble cast, including Karen Rodriguez, Lamorne Morris, Abraham Popoola, Li Jun Li, and Jack Huston. Each actor contributes to the richly woven narrative, further emphasising the show’s themes of rivalry and redemption.
As the entire series—comprising eight episodes—has now been made available on Prime Video following its debut on MGM+’s linear broadcast channel, fans of dynamic storytelling and engaging characters are encouraged to immerse themselves in this thrilling addition to the Spider-Man universe.
In a world where narratives often blend the supernatural with gritty realism, “Spider-Noir” stands out as a unique exploration of character dynamics, propelled by the compelling performances of its leading actors. Gleeson’s portrayal of Silvermane is both menacing and entertaining, leaving audiences eagerly anticipating what other surprises lie in store as the series unfolds.
