Barletta expressed deep sorrow over the loss, describing Johnson as “one of the most talented and creative people to ever step on or off a skateboard.” In his tribute, he reflected on their last meeting less than a month ago in San Jose, where they enjoyed reminiscing about their shared experiences. “He was sober, healthy, and full of life,” Barletta recalled, emphasising the shock of losing such a vibrant personality.

Marc Johnson, who earned the accolade of Thrasher’s Skateboarder of the Year in 2007, had a significant impact on the sport and the people within it. Barletta, who met Johnson as a teenager, lamented the trajectory of his friend’s career, which had seen both incredible highs and challenging lows. “I watched him achieve all his skateboard dreams, only to later watch his career fall apart,” he shared, capturing the complexities of Johnson’s life.

Barletta’s tribute painted Johnson as both a “genius and a tortured soul,” underscoring the inner battles he faced throughout his life. “He wanted to be remembered for his skateboarding, not for his failures or shortcomings,” Barletta noted, reflecting on Johnson’s humble beginnings in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Against all odds, Johnson managed to rise above his circumstances, travelling globally and leaving a lasting impression on many.
“There will always be his video parts, creations that no one can replicate,” Barletta further remarked. His influence extended beyond his own performances; he continuously sought to uplift those around him and provide opportunities for others. “He opened doors for guys like me and Jerry, and single-handedly put San Jose back on the map,” Barletta added, showcasing the profound impact Johnson had on the skateboarding scene in California.
While the exact cause of Johnson’s death has not been revealed, his struggles with alcoholism have been documented. In a 2013 interview with Jenkem Magazine, he spoke candidly about a particularly challenging period in his life, stating, “I’m grateful to be where I am” concerning his ongoing sobriety.
In response to the news, many within the skateboarding world have shared their condolences, each reflecting on Johnson’s indelible mark on the sport. Olympic medalist Jagger Eaton commented, “A legend gone too soon. A sad day,” echoing a sentiment felt by many. Sage Elsesser also paid tribute, stating, “Rest in Peace Marc 💙 We honour and celebrate your name. Truly one of a kind.”
Other prominent figures in skateboarding, including Mark Appleyard, expressed their grief, stating, “What a legend and awesome guy. Icon on and off the board.” The widespread outpouring of love and remembrance signifies the substantial legacy Johnson leaves behind, one that will not be forgotten in the years to come.
Such tributes serve as a testament to Johnson’s life and career, reminding us that he will continue to inspire many through his art, both on and off the skateboard. As his friends and fans grapple with the loss, they find solace in celebrating the vibrancy and creativity that defined Marc Johnson’s life.
