Milah Faciane, a spirited three-year-old from Liberty Hill, Texas, has displayed remarkable resilience in the face of a rare spinal condition that typically affects adults. Her journey began in May 2025, when a seemingly ordinary birthday celebration for her father took a sudden turn for the worse. After playing with other children, Milah was unable to walk properly and was later diagnosed with a spinal arteriovenous malformation (AVM) — a serious tangle of blood vessels around the spinal cord, usually seen in much older patients.

Initially, Milah’s parents, Blake Faciane and Linda Huynh, attributed their daughter’s limp to fatigue or a possible sprained ankle. However, after a restless night and further difficulties in movement, they rushed her back to the emergency room at Dell Children’s North. Here, the gravity of her condition became clear, leaving Milah temporarily paralysed from the waist down.
Dr. Kevin K. Kumar, who heads the neuro-oncology team at Dell Children’s Medical Center, explained the urgency of Milah’s situation. As the condition could potentially lead to permanent paralysis, immediate surgical intervention became necessary. “Time was of the essence,” he noted, as they aimed to prevent long-term deficits.
Milah was swiftly transferred to the main campus of Dell Children’s in Austin. During an extensive eight-hour surgery, Dr. Kumar and his colleague, Dr. Elias B. Rizk, navigated the intricate web of blood vessels affecting her spinal cord. Their skillful operation allowed them to selectively address the tangled vessels, ultimately restoring the nerve signals to her legs.
Initially, Milah was expected to spend twelve weeks in rehabilitation following her surgery. However, her resilience shone through, as she progressed rapidly, completing her rehabilitation in just six weeks. Upon discharge, she left the hospital in a wheelchair but was determined to relearn essential motor skills. With encouragement from her family and therapists, she soon returned to crawling and, by the end of October, was walking independently.
Milah’s recovery has been nothing short of extraordinary, and her doctors now regard her as “essentially cured.” She continues to attend regular check-ups, including annual angiograms, to monitor her health. “She’s really a normal kid,” Linda expressed, highlighting how Milah has adjusted back into the vibrant life of childhood.
Recently, Milah’s parents enrolled her in a local programme designed to enhance children’s physical and emotional well-being, where they report she thrives among her peers. Her parents have actively shared their experiences through an Instagram initiative named Milah’s Miracle, aimed at raising awareness and funds to support families facing similar challenges. They stress the importance of prompt medical attention, encouraging parents to trust their instincts if they sense something amiss in their child’s health.
Reflecting on their ordeal, Blake remarked that delaying care could have had devastating consequences. “If we had waited just one or two days, she definitely wouldn’t be walking now,” he asserted. Meanwhile, Linda echoed this sentiment, emphasising the impact immediate action had on Milah’s recovery.
In addition to raising awareness, the family has also launched a GoFundMe campaign to mitigate the expenses stemming from Milah’s treatment. They see their journey as a testament to the power of community and the need for ongoing support for children with AVM.
As Milah continues to grow, her inspiring spirit remains evident. According to Blake, every tumble she takes is followed by an unwavering determination to get back up and keep moving forward. “She falls a lot, but she never lets it hold her back,” he said with pride.
Despite the challenges they’ve faced, Linda and Blake are grateful for the care received at Dell Children’s Medical Center and are committed to fostering hope for others on similar paths. “It was definitely a miracle,” Linda reflects, mentioning her daughter’s incredible strength as the engine of their family’s resilience through adversity.
Milah’s story serves as a heartfelt reminder of the fragility of health and the strength found in young spirits. Through their commitment to raise awareness, her parents are not only honouring her journey but also paving the way for others facing similar trials, embodying the message of hope and determination in the face of life’s curves.
