A Florida man has been taken into custody after allegedly threatening a school bus driver with a firearm. The incident involved Otoniel Carlos O’Valle, who confronted the driver at a bus stop in Citrus Springs on 21 May. Local law enforcement were notified of the situation by the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office following a report made to a School Resource Officer.

According to a press release issued by the authorities, the unsettling encounter took place in the vicinity of North Velvet Terrace and West Bromin Court around 9:09 a.m. O’Valle is reported to have arrived at the bus stop in a blue Chevrolet Blazer. He approached the bus where a substitute driver was present, and it is claimed he displayed a handgun and inquired if she was the usual driver.

Upon finding out that the driver was not the regular personnel, O’Valle reportedly remarked that it was her “lucky day.” He then allegedly placed the weapon into his front pocket while expressing his frustration, stating that the regular driver had previously reprimanded his children. This disturbing action prompted immediate concern, as it unfolded on school property.
Eyewitness accounts supported the driver’s report of events. A bus aide corroborated her version, and the Major Crimes Unit of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office conducted a thorough review of the incident. They found video and audio evidence from the school bus that verified the driver’s claims, showing O’Valle holding an object that appeared to be a firearm prior to placing it in his pocket. This footage was crucial in ascertaining the seriousness of the incident.
Authorities emphasised the severity of the situation, as the confrontation occurred at an official school bus stop, which falls under specific legal restrictions concerning firearms in Florida. Sheriff David Vincent assured the public that the safety of students and school staff is paramount. He stated, “Anyone who threatens or brings harm toward a Citrus County school, its staff, or our children will face an immediate and uncompromising response from law enforcement.”
O’Valle’s actions led to his arrest, which was executed by the Ocala Police Department following a warrant from Citrus County. He faces two serious charges: possession of a firearm on school property and aggravated assault against a public transit employee. Such offences reflect the legal framework designed to protect educational environments from acts of violence.
In light of the incident, the Citrus County School District has announced that O’Valle will receive no-trespass paperwork, effectively barring him from school property in the future. This decision underscores the district’s commitment to maintaining a safe environment for both students and staff.
The alarming nature of the event has raised concerns about safety in schools, echoing a broader dialogue on parental conduct and the appropriate methods of addressing grievances related to school staff. The situation underlines the critical need for zero tolerance towards any threats of violence in educational settings.
As the investigation continues, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office remains vigilant, expressing a strong stance against any actions that could endanger the well-being of children in their care. With ongoing scrutiny and the clear support of local law enforcement, residents are reminded of the importance of ensuring safe and secure environments for all students.
